RETINOPATHY OF PREMATURITY d/o that is characterized by rapid growth of retinal blood vessels in the premature infant in regular children- retinal vascularization begins at 4 months and is complete at 9mo of right after birth premature babies are born w INCOMPLETE retinal vascularization, yet new vessels continue to grow between the vascularized and nonvascularized retina risk factors: LBW , early gestational age, sepsis, high light intensity, hypothermia premature infants should have serial examinations by an ophthalmologist until the ROP has regressed and normal vascularization is seen laser sx can be necessary to prevent blindness complications include → myopia, glaucoma, blindness, strabismus assessment strabismus asymmetric corneal light reflex ensure all premature infants are routinely screened for any eye and vision deficits * nursing management focus on ensuring that the family is compliant with ophthalmologists recommendations even when ROP is resolved- make sure that children still f/u w their ophthalmologists regularly
