ORAL COMMUNICATION CHAPTER 1: DEFINITION, ELEMENTS, AND PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION COMMUNICATION Communication is a transactional process within the dimensions of relationship, content, and context. It is affected by interpersonal, small group, organizational, public, mass, and intercultural situations. People communicate to inform, entertain, or persuade. Communication is important in gathering information, developing self-concept, and entertaining. There is no single definition for the complex and multidimensional process of oral communication. The symbolic nature of communication is a key feature. The issue of intentionality is addressed by communication as a planned behavior. The situational nature of communication means that communication is influenced by situations. FIVE ELLEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION 1. Source – the originator of the message. 2. Message – the set of verbal or nonverbal symbols sent to a receiver. 3. Channel – the means by which a message is conveyed from a source to a receiver. 4. Receiver – the destination of the message. 5. Feedback – verbal or nonverbal reactions to a message received by the source. Encoding – process of converting the message into words, or other forms. Decoding – process of interpreting the encoded message. Context – environment communication takes place. where Barrier – factors that affect the flow of communication. PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION speaker generates an idea. speaker encodes an idea into words/actions. speaker transmits out a message. receiver gets the message. receiver decodes the message based on the context. receiver sends feedback.
