ORAL COMMUNICATION CHAPTER 2: COMMUNICATION MODELS COMMUNICATION MODEL A model gives a general picture of the circumstances in the communication process. It also gives a guide to the students the key points, and can help in predicting what will happen in the communication process. 3. Berlo’s SMCR Model of Communication (1960) • 4 MODELS OF COMMUNICATION 1. Lasswell’s Model of Communication (1948) • • • Harold D. Lasswell, an American political scientist. “A convenient way to describe an act of communication is to answer the following questions: Who? Says what? In which channel? To whom? With what effect?”. Has five elements: communicator, message, medium, receiver, and effect of the message on the receiver physically, emotionally, and mentally. Based on the key functions of communication in our society, mainly surveillance, correlation, and transmission. Discusses how the communication process can be even more complex as many key factors affect what could have been simple elements. 4. Schramm’s Communication Model (1954) • • From a simple human communication model that accounted for the accumulated experiences of two individuals tying to communicate to each other, and then to a model that considers human communication as interaction between two individuals. The first model is similar to Shannon’s 2. Shannon and Weaver’s Mathematical Model (1948) • • • • • Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver. Used by linguistic (language) and behavioral (human behavior) scientists. Described communication as a linear, oneway process. Identifies five functions to be performed and notes one dysfunctional factor, which is noise. Noise here refers not only to physical noise, it also includes noise we hear within us. Has seven elements: sender, encoding, channel, decoding, receiver, noise, and feedback. • • In the second model, Schramm introduces the notion that only what is shared in the fields of experience of both source and the destination is actually communicated. The third model deals with communication as an interaction with both parties encoding, decoding, transmitting, and receiving signal.
