‭Alveolar ventilation‬ ‭Alveolar ventilation is calculated using the following formula:‬ ‭‬ V ● ‭ A = Alveolar ventilation‬ ‭●‬ ‭●‬ ‭VC = Tidal volume (500 ml) or tidal volume VD = Dead volume‬ ‭(150 ml)‬ ‭●‬ ‭Fr = Respiratory frequency (approximately 12 to 16 cycles)‬ ‭ Alveolar‬ ‭ventilation‬ ‭is‬ ‭the‬ ‭only‬ ‭one‬ ‭that‬ ‭is‬‭effective‬‭in‬‭alveolar-capillary‬ ➜ ‭exchanges.‬ ‭ The‬‭tidal‬‭volume‬‭(it‬‭is‬‭sometimes‬‭called‬‭tidal‬‭volume:‬‭VT)‬‭represents‬‭the‬ ➜ ‭amplitude of respiration.‬ ‭➜Respiratory rate represents how quickly you breathe.‬ ‭ It's‬ ‭the‬ ‭same‬ ‭thing‬ ‭with‬ ‭exercise.‬ ‭During‬ ‭exercise,‬ ‭it‬ ‭is‬ ‭therefore‬ ➜ ‭preferable‬ ‭to‬ ‭breathe‬ ‭deeply‬ ‭and‬ ‭slowly‬ ‭to‬ ‭have‬ ‭a‬ ‭greater‬ ‭supply‬ ‭of‬ ‭oxygen than if you breathe quickly and superficially.‬ ‭ In‬‭fact,‬‭the‬‭dead‬‭volume‬‭(or‬‭dead‬‭space)‬‭being‬‭constant,‬‭if‬‭we‬‭increase‬ ➜ ‭the‬ ‭tidal‬ ‭volume‬ ‭it‬ ‭is‬ ‭the‬ ‭alveolar‬ ‭ventilation‬ ‭which‬ ‭will‬ ‭increase‬ ‭significantly‬ ‭and‬ ‭which‬ ‭will‬ ‭therefore‬ ‭allow‬ ‭an‬ ‭effective‬ ‭supply‬‭(since‬‭it‬‭is‬ ‭the‬ ‭alveolar‬ ‭ventilation‬ ‭which‬ ‭is‬ ‭the‬ ‭only‬ ‭effective‬ ‭in‬ ‭alveolar-capillary‬ ‭exchanges).‬ ‭ It‬ ‭is‬ ‭therefore‬ ‭necessary‬ ‭to‬ ‭increase‬ t‭ he‬ ‭amplitude‬ o ➜ ‭ f‬ ‭respiratory‬ ‭movements‬ ‭and‬ ‭not‬ ‭the‬ ‭respiratory‬ ‭frequency‬ ‭to‬ ‭increase‬ ‭the‬ ‭effectiveness of alveolar ventilation.‬
