‭RESPIRATORY‬‭PHYSIOLOGY‬ ‭INTRODUCTION.‬ ‭The‬ ‭respiratory‬ ‭system‬ ‭and‬ ‭the‬ ‭cardiac‬ ‭system‬ ‭go‬ ‭hand‬ ‭in‬ ‭hand. Breathing has an essential role. Its main function is to:‬ ‭⮚‬ ‭provide oxygen: 02 to the cells of the body.‬ ‭⮚‬ ‭Rid the body of waste: CO2 (excess carbon dioxide).‬ ‭⮚‬ ‭Maintain‬ ‭blood‬ ‭parameters‬ ‭at‬ ‭a‬ ‭normal‬ ‭level‬ ‭(measured‬ ‭by‬ ‭blood‬ ‭gases: paO2, paCO2, SaO2 and pH)‬ ‭⮚‬ ‭whatever‬ ‭the‬ ‭demands‬ ‭of‬ ‭the‬ ‭body:‬ ‭rest,‬ ‭sleep,‬ ‭everyday‬ ‭effort,‬ ‭walking, stair climbing, intense sporting type effort.‬ ‭The transport of O2 and CO2 depends on 4 distinct processes:‬ ‭⮚‬ ‭pulmonary ventilation (movement of gases in and out of the lungs)‬ ‭⮚‬ ‭alveolar-capillary diffusion‬ ‭⮚‬ ‭the transport of O2 and CO2 by the blood‬ ‭⮚‬ ‭the passage of gases from the capillaries to the tissues (cellular‬ ‭respiration)‬ ‭STRUCTURE OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM.‬ ‭The respiratory system is composed from top to bottom:‬ ‭⮚‬ ‭of the nose (nostrils)‬ ‭⮚‬ ‭of the mouth‬ ‭⮚‬ ‭of the pharynx‬ ‭⮚‬ ‭of the larynx‬ ‭⮚‬ ‭of the trachea‬ ‭⮚‬ ‭of the two primary bronchi (right and left) which enter the lungs‬ ‭⮚‬ ‭bronchioles‬ ‭ his‬ ‭system‬ ‭is‬ ‭therefore‬ ‭a‬ ‭set‬ ‭of‬ ‭passages‬ ‭which‬ ‭filter‬ ‭the‬ ‭air‬ ‭and‬ T ‭transport‬ ‭it‬ ‭inside‬ ‭the‬ ‭lung‬ ‭where‬ ‭gas‬ ‭exchanges‬ ‭will‬ ‭take‬ ‭place‬ ‭in‬ ‭the‬ ‭alveolar bags.‬ ‭The diaphragm is the main muscle of breathing.‬
