1 Reflective Assignment XXXXX Swinburne University Online PSY10007: Brain and Behaviour ELA: XXXXXXX XXXXXXX 2 PSY10007 Assignment 2 Part 1: Ethics Reflections Study 1 Title: The Role of Self-Compassion and Memory Integration in Social Anxiety Disorder Ethical Value and Principle: Research merit and integrity Reflection: This study required you to complete a questionnaire covering self-compassion, emotion and social anxiety, which meets the ethical value and principle. Social anxiety disorder can be debilitating for some and have further effects on a person’s well-being, so having a better understanding is justified by its potential benefits, improved knowledge and individual wellbeing (1.1a). The questions were appropriate to the topic headings and were designed to achieve the data collection outcomes for the aim of the study (1.1b). The study structure and questions were designed to ensure anonymity and respect of the participant. The way the participant was required to participate in the study would not have been compromised (1.1.d). The data collected during this study would create better understanding and provide better knowledge of the topics and the fair balance of questions would enable the results to be shared whether they were unfavorable or favorable (1.3a & d) Study 2 Title: Spirituality, Naturalism, Mysticism and Agnosticism in Personality Ethical Value and Principle: Justice Reflection: The study questions enabled the researchers to collect a broad range of beliefs and comprehensive answers within the topic of Spirituality, Naturalism, Mysticism and Agnosticism in Personality, which meets the ethical value and principal of justice. The study was fair in its selection and the statement was clear in its aims, objectives and the responses with be subject to statistical analysis (1.4a). With the large pool of questions seeking responses to worldwide beliefs, behaviors, thoughts and feelings towards the study topic, there was no unfair burden on the participants and the method of responding was straight forward (1.4c). The statement is very clear in the objectives of the study and that the responses will be subject statistical analysis, shortened to be sets of items and it indicates what results will be presented (1.5) Study 3 Title: Patient experiences of the burden of using medicines and the associated impact on quality of life Ethical Value and Principle: Beneficence 3 Reflection: This study was addressing a global concern and trend across the world of increased prescribing of medication, with patients taking 5 or more drugs relating to the same health condition, referred to as “Polypharmacy”. There are enormous benefits to from this research to participants and the wider community to reduce the amount of medication that patients are being prescribed, as it is a burden on the health system. The research would not cause any harm, but it may be difficult for some to answer questions relating to their medication, but the risk of discomfort will likely produce a benefit (1.6). The researchers have designed the study and questions to minimise any risk of harm and discomfort to the participants by it not being invasive but more fact finding by way of questions (1.7a). The study takes into account the welfare of the participants but enabling them to participate in an environment that will not cause them any discomfort and it creates privacy and anonymity (1.7c). Study 4 Title: Social Attitudes Survey – Spinsters and Bachelors: Do attitudes differ towards single 30-something never married, single men and women? Ethical Value and Principle: Respect Reflection: This study looked at the attitudes towards those who appear to have exceeded the marriageable age by gender. This study fits the ethical value and principle of respect. Having negative attitudes towards those who are older and not married is not respectful and has disregard for the persons welfare, beliefs and potentially their cultural heritage. This research will explore society’s attitudes and identify the negativity (1.10). The series of questions the participants were required to answer respected the privacy of the participant by providing anonymity, confidentiality and didn’t cross any culturally sensitive areas (1.11). The study provided respect to those that participated by allowing those to choose whether they answered questions and they were not prevented from proceeding if questions were not answered and or their participation terminated if they chose to not answer all questions. Academic skills developed are, learning academic integrity and plagiarism through referencing and preparing individual work for my assignments, academic essay writing through the assignments using evidence, analysis and interpretation and finally the weekly readings have developed the ability to read, understand and note take in preparation for weekly modules and the exam.
