INTRODUCTION TO PRACTICUM 4 This practical guide is designed to help you learn the steps for stopping bleeding. The action to stop bleeding is an effort to control bleeding in patients who have experienced injuries that result in damage to blood vessels and active bleeding. In certain situations bleeding must be stopped immediately because it can result in death. Internal bleeding can occur in internal organs, and external bleeding can also occur which can be seen on the surface of the body. There are several techniques to stop external bleeding such as; elevating the source of bleeding, direct pressure, indirect pressure, tourniquets, and administering blood clotting agents.Each technique has its own advantages and disadvantages, but you canAlso done simultaneously to control bleeding. Some terminology used: 1. Bleeding: discharge of blood from blood vessels due to injury or due to certain abnormalities. 2. Arteries: are blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body. 3. Veins: are blood vessels that carry blood from parts of the body to the heart. 4. Gauze/dressing: is a material that is placed on the wound. The gauze will absorb blood and form blood clots. Blood clots will block the source of bleeding. Gauze/dressing will also protect the wound from contamination and further injury. 5. Bandage: is a material used to hold the gauze/dressing, so that the gauze does not shift from the desired place, and at the same time puts pressure on the source of bleeding. 6. Tourniquet: is a tool for pressing blood vessels in the extremities with the aim of stopping bleeding in the distal part of the tool. 7. Distal: is an indication of a location that is further away from the guide point, in this topic the heart is the central point. The hand is distal to the elbow joint, because the hand is further from the heart than the elbow. Distal is the opposite of proximal. 1. The aim of the practicum is: After carrying out the laboratory practicum, you are expected to be able to stop the bleeding. 2. Practicum place: Laboratory 3. Total time allocation: In the health science practicum, the number of credits taken is 2 credits, where 1 credit is equivalent to 28 hours, so the total number of practicum hours is 56 hours (4 hours per day) so it takes 14 days, with the division of time as follows: examination practicum Airway, Breathing and Circulation(ABC) 4 days, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) 3 days, installation of splints and restrictions 4 days, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) 3 days.
