Travel used to be pretty simple: you find the cheapest flight, book a cute Airbnb, take some photos, and go home. But with Gen Z traveling more than ever, they are redefining what a good trip looks like.

Now travelling is not only about saving money, but also about how you travel. Is it sustainable? Is it easy to live there for a few weeks? Can you eat well, move around cheaply, and not feel like you’re wasting money or harming the planet?

More and more destinations are becoming suitable for this kind of travel. So if you want to spend smarter and feel good about your choices, these places actually make it possible.

To identify the top Gen Z travel destinations for affordable and sustainable leisure, EduBirdie selected countries with high Environmental Performance Index (EPI) scores and compared them across factors such as meal affordability, availability of vegetarian options, public transit costs, circular material use, number of thrift and second-hand stores, and distance from the USA (NYC).

The Top Travel Destinations for Gen Z

Top Travel Destinations for Gen Z

1️⃣Japan

Score: 4.43

Why choose between sustainable travel destinations and low costs when you can have both? Japan ranks first because it combines all three travel preferences Gen Z actually values: cheap daily life, easy transport, and high sustainability. Meals are most affordable there if you eat like locals. Getting around is also simple and cheap thanks to one of the most reliable public transport systems in the world. On top of that, Japan has the strongest culture of recycling and second-hand shopping.

2️⃣ Estonia

Score: 3.89

Estonia is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets among affordable travel destinations, where sustainability is built into everyday life. It has the highest environmental performance score on the entire list, meaning cleaner cities and more efficient systems. Estonia is easy to navigate, transport works well, and daily costs are manageable. It may not be the cheapest or most popular destination, but for a traveler who wants sustainability to be baked into the destination, Estonia quietly delivers.

3️⃣ Luxembourg

Score: 3.75

Free public transit for everyone. Yes, really. Luxembourg made it a national policy, which earns it the highest score for the cheap transport category. That alone is a major draw for travelers looking to get around without burning through their budget or adding to carbon emissions. Environmental performance is also high. Meals aren’t the cheapest, but the transit savings alone make a big dent.

The Top Destinations for Eating Well Without Emptying Your Wallet

If keeping food costs low is the priority, Central and Eastern Europe is home to some of the cheapest countries to visit.

Countries like Slovakia and Czechia have very affordable meals, and Poland isn’t far behind, so you can eat well without thinking too much about money. These countries are not only cheap, but also have really good food cultures. A sit-down lunch costs a few dollars and street food is everywhere.

For Gen Z travelers who’d rather spend money on experiences than restaurant bills,  these are the best cheap travel destinations 2026.

The Top Destinations for Plant-based Travelers

For vegetarian and vegan travelers, some destinations make life much easier.

Sweden and Finland rank the highest for vegetarian-friendliness. Germany also isn’t far behind, and Berlin is known as one of the most vegan-friendly cities. Australia is also in the top group, where oat milk coffee and plant-based menus are very common.

These are the places where you won’t spend half your trip hunting for something you can actually eat.

The Top Destinations for Getting Around Without a Car

If you’d rather skip taxis and rental cars, a few destinations can make traveling very easy for you.

Luxembourg’s free public transit is, of course, unbeatable – no other country on the list comes close. But Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, and Lithuania all have a great score in transit affordability too.

With reliable buses and trains, you don’t have to worry about burning through your budget or your carbon allowance.

The Top Destinations for Sustainable Shopping and Secondhand Finds

If half the fun of travel is coming home with something you couldn’t find anywhere else, these destinations take that to another level.

Japan is obviously on top, but the UK and Canada also have strong thrift cultures, with charity shops and vintage markets everywhere. France and Belgium are close behind, where brocantes (weekend flea markets on small streets) are a normal part of local life.

For Gen Z travelers who want to shop without the fast-fashion guilt, these are the perfect places.

The Top Destinations for Eco-conscious Travelers Flying Out of New York

Long-haul flights are expensive and carbon-heavy, which is a problem when sustainability is the whole point.

For Gen Z travelers leaving from New York, the closest destinations on this list are Ireland, the UK, Portugal, and France. These are reachable in under eight hours. Ireland and the UK score well for environmental performance, Portugal stands out for affordable meals and a growing secondhand scene, and France adds strong circular economy credentials to the mix.

They won’t top Japan or Estonia overall, but if you want to keep your footprint in check from the moment you leave the gate, Western Europe is the smarter short-haul call.

Methodology

To create this rating, we scored each destination across seven key factors: environmental performance index, meal affordability, vegetarianism, public transit price, circular material use, thrift & second-hand stores number, and distance from NYC.

Each factor was scored between zero and one, with one representing the most favorable outcome. Final scores for each destination were calculated by summing all seven values.
