Gender equality is the longest war that ladies have been battling and still are for an extended time. Women in Afghanistan have been experiencing gender equality issues in its extreme frame for ages caused by traditions and cultures along with caste and religion. Khaled Hosseini’s, A Thousand Splendid Suns clearly illustrates the predicament of women behind the dividers of Afghanistan among some intrusions within the nation. In the novel, the issue of women's liberation and gender equality is raised through the characters of Mariam and Laila by exposing them to unfairness and mistreatment. The novel stresses ladies who are denied their rights and their restrictions of learning, along with hindering women’s choices and freedom within the male-dominated world. Hosseini transitions the color of the motif of green in three subsequent phases which represents the decreasing of women’s freedom throughout the novel.
The first phase is of Mariam before her marriage to Rasheed, where she had the freedom to do anything she desired, she had control of her actions and choices. This was the stage where she didn’t know there was such a concept of being inferior or superior then someone or in this novel, a gender. The green at the beginning of the novel is clear and bright. “He described to her the green wheat fields of Herat, the orchards, the vines pregnant with plump grapes.” this represents the calmness, freedom, and peace by describing how beautiful and bright the nature of green is. The “green wheat fields of….” surround the Herat everywhere showing freedom is there and visible to everyone, especially Mariam. Another quote “The two of them sat outside the kolba, ate pine nuts and sipped green tea, watched the bulbul bird darting from tree to tree.” The green tea is a very pure and almost clear light green colored tea, this shade of green symbolizes and illustrates the clarity of freedom that Mariam possessed before she encountered tragedies in the future. Both pieces of evidence presented visualized nature and the environment, but there is also another quote that has an aspect of nature in it, “the room had a bed with a green-flowered blanket knit in a honeycomb design”. Even though it was not describing the full outside environment like the other quotes the mentioning of the flower and honeycomb design is a trait of nature. The green in this phase of Mariam before getting married was often used to describe nature and sometimes a part of nature, like the flower. The often mention of the green in the environment brings in the tone of peace, freedom, and calmness. Not only did the description of nature symbolize calmness, but the mention of the clock with a “mint-green face” did too. Hosseini often used green whenever describing the surroundings and anything nature-like, or a certain detail of nature. Overall the beginning of The Thousand Splendid Suns epitomizes the privilege and independence that Mariam owned that she believed could not be taken away from her.
