The Anglo-Saxon epic poem ‘Beowulf’ deals with good and evil. Beowulf was a responsible, brave, and a strong person. Beowulf was loyal to all his people and kept his word with the people such as willing to risk his life for them which that’s something many people wouldn’t do. Oprah Winfrey was also a responsible, brave, and a strong person. Oprah Winfrey was one of the richest and very influential women in the United States. In my story I will be comparing the heroic qualities between Beowulf and Oprah.
Beowulf and Oprah shared some of the same characteristics of bravery, the courageous behavior or character. Beowulf showed bravery when he said: “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, if the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me” (pp.625-628). Beowulf was being brave and not backing down to anyone. Beowulf wanted to protect his kingdom and his people. Oprah Winfrey was sexually abused by her teenage cousin, by male family and friends. Oprah spoke openly about it on her talk show. Oprah dealt with many personal problems and she began overeating, Oprah would get told that her eyes were too far apart, her nose was too wide, and that her chin was too long. Oprah had come to a conclusion to not let anyone handle or control the way she looks or her personality ever again! This made her brave because many people do not talk about this kind of problems openly, instead they’ll do drugs, commit suicide, or they’ll be down about it their whole life, but no Oprah seen different and did different things not only to help herself but to help others as well.

Beowulf was responsible. Beowulf is a responsible leader and hero. He showed loyalty to his people and his men. Beowulf put his life in danger and put all the people before him to protect them, it was not Beowulf job to protect them but he did it anyways such as when he fought Grendel, Grendel’s mother and the dragon. All the people were scared because Grendel was killing the people for 12 years. “No, I expect no Danes will fret about sewing our shrouds, if he wins. And if death does take me, send the hammered mail of my armor to Higlac, return the inheritance I had from Hrethel, and he from Wayland. Fate will unwind as it must!” (pp.279-284). This quotes meaning is like he might have a chance and winning or losing but he knows that fate is on his side. He was willing to protect the Danes and Geats. Beowulf stepped up and took in the responsibility of battling Grendel, which Beowulf ended up killing Grendel. After Grendel’s mother saw what Beowulf had done to her son, she became angry and wanted to get revenge back at Beowulf. Beowulf and Grendel’s mother started fighting, and Beowulf won. The dragon and Beowulf fought as well of course Beowulf beat the dragon. Oprah Winfrey, she had many responsibilities, such as having weekly book reports, being in drama club, debate club, student council, and church clubs. Oprah’s father was trying to build her up and get her ready for the real world, he disciplined and was trying to show her determination. Oprah thought her father was being tough on her but she was just showing her responsibility and as she got older, she understood.
Oprah Winfrey is known as the national face of woman being a leader and being strong, while Beowulf is the definition of strong and is the leader of many. Oprah Winfrey she is a very strong, encouraging and inspiring women. Many people would try and tell Oprah that she was going to fast with her life because when Orpah started to get out there, many people were coming after her to be in talk shows, to play parts in movies, to give advice and to help out the people and not only that but Oprah was battling a weight problem as well. At first Oprah was hesitate and very exhausted about everything that was going on in her life. It was all too much to take in at one time. The people around her advised her to wait till she was ready and that she needed to take a break, to slow down in her life. Oprah Winfrey did not let anyone get in her head and as bad as Oprah wanted to give up, she didn’t because she knew she had to be strong for herself as well for the people, because she was battling for other people to be strong too. Beowulf was the strongest person out the whole story because not only was he strong, but he had ambition to face Grendel, which everyone was scared of him. In this quote, “I’d use no sword, no weapon, if this beast could be killed without it, cursed to death like Grendel, gripped in my hands and torn limb from limb” (pp.630-633), Beowulf knew that fate was on his side and knew he was strong enough and wanted to fight fair with no weapon’s. Beowulf was old but he ended up beating Grendel, Grendel’s mother and the dragon, but eventually Beowulf died, but Wiglaf stood by his side
This essay showed how Beowulf was brave, responsible, and strong as well as Oprah Winfrey; it shows their heroic characteristics.
