Rome made a lot of conquests and with the territory it was gaining Rome was also attaining some cultural influences. For this reason, it is very common to see influences on Roman art from the Greeks, the Etruscan and the Egyptians (Ambler, 2015).

The Greeks had the most influence on Roman art and culture to the point that Rome adapted much of Greek cultural heritage, and she even used to commission famous Greek works. The Romans copied a lot of Greek artworks, but at the same time they made some variations and some small changes for instance, they would change the humor when it was serious Greek art (Ambler, 2015).

If we were to ask what made Roman art Roman, we could easily answer by pointing out the brilliant way of adapting, converting, combining elements and adding a touch of humor the Romans had (Ambler, 2015).

Also, Roman sculpture were influenced and inspired by the ancient Greeks. But some differences between the sculptures of the two civilizations can be seen for instance, Romans made their statues of people with very realistic looks, the Greeks on the other hand focused on exaggerated beauty (Study.com, n.d.).

Sculpture and paintings had many public uses. In fact, in the period of the Republic, art portrayed the common goals of the Republic. These common goals included hard work, age, wisdom and being a community leader. The patrons were represented with balding heads, large noses and wrinkles to show that they had spent their lives working for the Republic (Ambler, 2015).

During imperial Rome art had gained some different uses than republican Rome. In fact, in this period art was used to indicate shift of leadership, and it was used to exalt the ruler and his family (Ambler, 2015). The dynasty of Augustus and Julio-Claudian where fond of classical elements and they adapted them as part of the art that represented their era. Then imperial Rome art shifted to art of late antiquity. The main characteristic of this type of art are the frontality of the figures, the stiffness of pose, they are less natural and they lack individualism (Ambler, 2015).

Romans used some artistic objects to decorate their homes and they used freed standing sculpture, bronze casting, vase art, mosaic, funerary sculpture, portrait and landscape painting and architectural sculpture (Wikipedia, n.d.).
