The Eucharist also known as the Holy Communion or the Lord’s Supper and other names is a Christian rite which is also a sacrament in most Catholic churches. The eucharist was instituted during the Last Supper by Jesus Christ, when he gave his disciples bread and wine during a Passover meal. Jesus said to “do this in memory of me” while calling the bread his body and the wine his blood. During the Eucharistic celebration in mass, us christians remember Christ’s sacrifice of himself on the cross and his commission of the apostles during the Last Supper. The modern Eucharist celebration consists of sacramental bread, sacramental wine, and all being consecrated on the altar and after is consumed. The people who receive this are called Communicants. We generally recognize the presence of Jesus in this rite, but our thoughts are not always the same when we think of how and where Jesus is during this time.

The Church brings us together to celebrate the Eucharist. The Eucharist always has been the most important aspect of the Christian religion. The CCC strongly believes that the real presence of Jesus’ body is in the Eucharist. Yet some believe that it’s just a symbol of him and not the real thing. But because of differences in both practice and doctrine the Eucharist was intended as a symbol of Jesus and fostering unity. Like said previously many Christian traditions teach that Jesus is present in the Eucharist one way or another. Some denominations think the Eucharist is commemorative or symbolic. Quakers, a denomination of Christianity, don't celebrate the Eucharist.

The beliefs of the Eastern Orthodox have much in common with Roman Catholicism. The different ideas contain piety and liturgy. The Roman catholicism institutes the Eucharist as a sacrament. Eastern orthodox churches teach that the holy spirit is part of the Eucharist. A big major difference is that the Eastern churches use leavened bread for the host, opposed to the Western churches using unleavened bread. For the baptists and congregationalists the Eucharist is an ordinance.

Protestant communion differs in one important way from the catholic conception of the sacrament. Catholics believe that through the words of the priest the transubstantiation occurs, and that the bread and wine become the real body and blood of Jesus. During the time of the Protestant Reformation the beliefs of this were contested. Most protestant traditions call the Eurcharistical rite communion. The protestant denominations don't rely on a priest to turn the bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus christ. There are also less rules and restrictions surrounding the preparation and administration of communion, but makes it in no way less important to these faiths.

“It is necessary to understand that Protestantism is a general term encompassing many denominations and the practice of communion varies within these denominations. Some engage in the act of communion every Sunday, while others take part in it monthly, quarterly, or less.”
