Furthermore, in Caravaggio’s art piece titled 'Martyrdom of Saint Matthew' during 1600, the painting takes place in the forefront of a large and dark interior, where nearly bare followers to the left and right anticipating baptism and an altar or shrine are in the background of the art piece. Caravaggio exerted several poses. He concentrated on the executioner in the middle, at the perilous moment when he lifts the supine on the helpless Saint Matthew. While Saint Matthew lifts his right hand in fear toward the killer, while the angel hand is hanging to the martyr's hand and the other characters disperse in fear. In addition to the image, the outbreak of activity contradicts with the inaction of the calling and the actions of those characters seem to be instantly halted, while these seem to be solidified in their positions. The crudity of the act of killing is adjusted by the skilled curve correlating the form of the angel within his arm and the palm part to Saint Matthew's arms. Lastly, the most separate character in the image is a self-portrait of Caravaggio himself. This implements a very particular reference intent for the viewer to show as if Caravaggio was concurring in this assassination and therefore this makes it contemporary. He gazes on the martyrdom as if to implicate the witness in it. This particular picture displays a lot of what Caravaggio’s style and approach to painting, in ways of an exaggeration, violence, dramatic and fear all in one sitting.
The reason this piece of Caravaggio was selected to present his work was that it really shows how this work is related to the artist characteristics and personality in showing a very angry and brutal personality and with so much strong emotion with each character. Also, this piece shows how Caravaggio expresses his feelings and emotions through his daily life and applying it into his work. Furthermore, Caravaggio’s implements a lot of personal and societal forces which drove him to approach his work in such a unique and powerful way. For example, a way that he does this is by his personal experiences with people and how they treat each other and what the consequences of laws or morals that are broken. He uses his daily experiences and activities as a source and a guide in how is paintings will turn out, for example, him getting angry at different circumstances or trying to get out of trouble when he knows he did something wrong. So, what Caravaggio does, he will include himself in the painting to show to others that he knows he is at fault but won’t admit it by voice but he will put himself in the picture to blend in with the others and to show that they all are partaking in a criminal activity, so that no specific person will be punished.
Overall, Caravaggio's artwork is very modern and contemporary and that it will always be present and that it won’t lose its touch with viewers.
