In our generation, various different people see Shakespeare as either relevant or irrelevant. If I’m going, to be honest, I dread Shakespeare, none of the work made sense to me particularly the way that they spoke. I would sit in class looking at the work my teacher has assigned in confusion wondering how much longer I would have had to learn about Shakespeare. And as much as I hate to admit it Shakespeare does have some significance today as we can compare how life was a long time ago from now. Shakespeare's plays help the audience connect as the characters are both of his time and for all time, this means that he performed his plays to allow us to see ourselves anew.
Key themes used in Romeo and Juliet are love, conflict, and family. Love is the most important theme depicted in Romeo and Juliet, as the whole play focuses on the romantic love between them to indicate the meaning of love at first sight. The play, tells the audience how love can be violent and that without each other, you feel that you can not live. The concept is indicated throughout the play as Romeo and Juliet would do anything for them to be with each other. These themes explain why the story of Romeo and Juliet impacts why Shakespeare is relevant, as people in society have similar experiences in their life. Common events that people in society have gone through, for example, arranged and forced marriage by parents. In Act 3 Scene 5, Lord Capulet says “And you be mine, I'll give you to my friend And you be not, hang, beg, starve, die in the streets. If you do what I say, I'll arrange your marriage with my friend.” Death is one of the worst tragedies that may come with an arranged marriage, Romeo and Juliet’s death only occurred because they were controlled by their families and were forbidden to be with each other, and most certainly they would have lived a happier life and at the end, nobody would have died.
In both Romeo and Juliet and warm bodies both love and interest have the name starting with R. In the film warm bodies R is what the zombie calls himself because he could not remember his name but the audience infers that his name is Romeo. The female actor in warm bodies is Julie which is short for Juliet. As R does not remember his name his best friend who is also a zombie name is M. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo's best friend’s name is Mercutio. Nora is Julie’s confidant, someone, she tells everything to, and has always wanted to take care of people and become a nurse. The nurse in Romeo and Juliet is someone who helps her communicate with Romeo and who she tells her nurse everything to. The most famous scene in Romeo and Juliet is the balcony scene, in this part, Romeo comes to Juliet’s balcony and confesses his love for her. In warm bodies, R does almost the same thing except he tells her that he misses her and to warn her about the zombie attacks. Another important scene is the tragic end of suicide. Romeo drinks the poison and Juliet stabs herself with a dagger because without each other they believe they cannot live. A similar scene to this happened in warm bodies except R and Julie did not die. When R and Julie were running away from the skeletons and her father who wanted R dead. They did not want to be separated, so no matter the result of the situation they wanted to be together and risk their own lives for each other, they jumped off the wall and R cushioned Julies fall because he wanted to protect her and make sure she stays alive. This scene acted as suicide but didn’t die. Warm Bodies is based on Romeo and Juliet which is why many events are very similar to each other. For example at the beginning of the movie, R eats Perry’s brain, killing him. Romeo does the same at the end of the by killing Paris. Also, some other similarities are that both families of humans and zombies do not get along. Caplets and Montagues have been enemies for many years. It is the same in warm bodies except for R’s family are the zombies and Julie's family are humans who kill zombies.
Romeo and Juliet include a variety of techniques/literary devices such as simile, imagery, and metaphors, written by William Shakespeare, these devices are used to keep the audience/reader engaged. Metaphor is used as they implied the comparison between two, unlike things. For example act 2, scene 2, line 3, Romeo says “Juliet is the sun”, using a metaphor that means he is implying that Juliet is beautiful and bright. An example of imagery is utilized in Act 1 scene 5, lines 55 and 56 when Romeo is describing the beauty of Juliet when saying, “ so shows a doc trooping with crows/as yonder lady o’er her fellows show.” The simile is used in Act 2, scene 6, lines 8-10 when Friar Lawrence warns Romeo about being too passionate about Juliet too soon. saying “These violent delights have violent ends And in their triumph die, like fire and powder, which, as they kiss, consume.” In the play, Romeo plays the role of the protagonist as his name is in the title to hint that he is important and the main character. Juliet can also play the protagonist they both have the desire to be together which brings conflict with their feuding families. The setting in Romeo and Juliet takes place around 1200 or 1300 A.D. with two families feuding. Romeo and Juliet perfectly capture the meaning of what being in love looks and feels like. Understanding the desire last forever despite the circumstances. Although it is old, Romeo and Juliet are still relevant and important to people's lives. Romeo and Juliet is an amazing play that is loved by a lot of people particularly the young, and still has an impact and entertains the modern audience.
