The elements in the story that can be seen as humorous are when the narrator starts describing Fortunato he uses words as quack but fixes it up saying that he was sincere. He also described Fortunato when he was drunk, giving elements of humor to his clothing and the way he treated the narrator.

The same can be said of 'The Tell-tale Heart'. Sometimes death can be funny. The way the story is told . There is a creepy humor to it, I agree.
Montresor's vague reasoning for seeking revenge on Fortunato, the fact that Montresor commits murder is further evidence of his unreliability. Montresor says that Fortunato had caused him a 'thousand injuries' and 'ventured upon insult,' which apparently justify his motivation for seeking revenge. Montresor's reason for committing a horrific murder is too undicriptive. However, Montresor simply glosses over Fortunato's 'injuries'' and assumes that his actions are warranted.
Montresor is considered an unreliable narrator because his opinion of Fortunato is biased. Montresor feels greatly wronged by Fortunato, but the exact wrongdoing that. Montresor's wounded pride and guilty conscience are both very plausible reasons that he would manipulate the facts of his story.
I think the narrator is the protagonist. I think this because we follow him from the beginning to the end which only protagonists usually only get. Ithink the real antagonist is Fortunato.
Fortunato's name means “the fortunate one” in Italian, which is ironic given that he ends up bricked within the Montresor catacombs and left to die. It was often very colorful, with bright colors such purple and yellow or red in patches, and may have pom poms or bells on the end of the cone cap. He chose it because he thought of himself as a jester, a person who enjoyed playing cruel tricks on people. The 'tight-fitting' costume makes it easy for Montresor to chain Fortunato tightly against the rock wall.
Fortunato's words toward Montresor prove that Fortunato is worthy of hatred. There is nothing that I can find that would support Montresor's insistence that this man had 'borne' him 'a thousand injuries.
The festival covers up that Fortunato and Montresor leave together because of the masks they were wearing and the variety of people. The catacombs make a perfect place for Montresor to kill Fortunato and to hide his body. The setting goes from a happy party and festival to a dark, scary tunnel filled with dead bodies and poisonous gases.
One major theme in “The Cask of Amontillado” is be careful how you treat others.Treat others the way you want to be treated. Montresor has taken insult upon insult from Fortunato.
