Abortion is the act of killing an unborn baby medically and legally. Most people hear of abortions and act like it is a normal thing when it is very far from that idea for others that think the opposite. The act of abortion takes away a human’s life without giving it a single chance at life. The official definition of abortion is “the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus” (Miller). Side effects of abortion are a continuing abortion without the mother’s approval (“Medical Abortion”), the procedure could go wrong, and will require a surgical abortion (“Medical Abortion”). These are the more serious side effects of abortions, but more common side effects are things like diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pains (“Possible Physical Side Effects After Abortion”). There are two different common procedures for early-term to late-term abortions (“Abortion Techniques”). They are called dilation and evacuation, D&A; and dilation and extraction, D&E (“Abortion Techniques”). The process of dilation and evacuation happens in the second trimester of the pregnancy (“Abortion Techniques”), while dilation and extraction are usually for late-term abortions. Many women have personal reasons for abortions, and through research in 2015, out of 71,740 women surveyed in Florida, 0.5% of women surveyed were victims of rape, 25% of women surveyed weren’t ready for a child, and 23% couldn’t afford the baby (“Here Are the Real Reasons Women Have Abortions...”). The fetus is alive by medical definitions while in the womb, abortion fits under the definition of murder, and it takes away the right to life for an individual.

The fetus in the womb is considered to be alive. While the baby is alive in the fetus, researchers have done experiments and found that the majority of fetuses are able to feel pain at 20 weeks (“Abortion ProCon.org”). If a late-term abortion occurs, then the unborn baby is able to feel everything, which is basically torture, as there are no painkillers for it. Although a fetus can feel pain at 20 weeks, it is able to feel a little pain at 8 weeks and on because its cortex is being developed around this time (Miller). Abortion to an unborn, but alive baby isn’t considered a crime. Animal abuse is punishable by 60-90 days in jail and/or a fine, but killing an alive, unborn baby isn’t a crime and one can’t be punished for it. Although animal abuse is terrible, it shouldn’t be punished if a person who has an abortion isn’t punished.

Abortion is simply murder. If a human already has a genetic code, then it is believed to be a live, human being (“Ethics - Abortion: When Is the Fetus ‘Alive'?”). A baby is said to be considered alive when a zygote is formed when the egg is fertilized by a sperm cell (“Life Begins at Fertilization with the Embryo's Conception”). Connecting abortion to murder is easy because they both have similar definitions of the concept of killing. The term abortion is able to fit under the definition of murder (“Does Having an Abortion Take an Innocent Human Life?”). One given reason through a survey was that the baby had a disability, but if that is the reason one is killing a baby, then that individual is being extremely discriminatory before knowing what that human could’ve done in their life (“Abortion ProCon.org”).

Abortion takes away the right of living for a human being because of apparent reasons. It is the act of taking away life before that certain life is allowed a chance at life. The unborn baby isn’t able to make the choice of being killed before birth, but every human has the right to live. 92% of women out of 71,740 that had abortions in Florida in 2015 said that they had an abortion for no reason at all (“Here are the Real Reasons Women Have Abortions...”). Taking away life for no reason is outrageous, and these are statistics for just one state, coming from a very small population compared to all of America. The women in this survey that represent the rest of the women getting abortions for no reason show that they use abortion as a means of convenience. Women could easily be using alternatives like contraceptives, like birth control, condoms, and spermicides, rather than making it an issue for themselves in the first place. Using these contraceptives is more convenient than going to an abortion clinic and arranging an appointment, and paying $300-$950. Although the U.S. Constitution doesn’t officially have a right to life specifically stated, the government still has considered an unborn baby as a human being (“Abortion ProCon.org”). This contradicts the laws because if the government considers an unborn baby as a human being, then abortion, by what they have said, should be illegal.

Officials and researchers claim that abortion is a women’s choice, it lowers crime rates, and it is used as a means of population control (“Abortion ProCon.org”). Women do have the choice of an abortion, but there should be restrictions as to why they are committing this act of violence. One setback that should be set into place is that a single woman should only be allowed to have a certain amount of abortions. 14% of women that have had one abortion previously have had three or more abortions after their first (“Here Are the Real Reasons Women Have Abortions...”) This shows that women that have more than one abortion are irresponsible with what they do with their bodies and with another individual. Abortion has been directly linked to lower crime rates (“Ethics - Abortion: When Is the Fetus ‘Alive'?”) But, the reason crime rates are lowered is because of all the illegal abortions that were happening, which could be easily punished by charges of murder (“Abortion ProCon.org”). Abortion also is able to be used as a population control (“Abortion ProCon.org”), but capital punishment is basically the same thing as abortions. The difference is the human that committed the crime had a choice in what they did, but an unborn, alive baby doesn’t have any choice or say if it is going to be killed.

Abortion is a terrible thing, from sucking a baby through a tube after cutting it up, or making a choice to use contraceptives as more of a convenience than killing a human being that never had a chance at living (“Abortion Techniques.”). Abortion was legalized in 1973 because of insufficient reasons for keeping it illegal, and the biggest reason for legalization was because a woman has the right to what they want to do with their own body (“Abortion ProCon.org”). Women do have their own choice, but abortion is still considered murder, it still takes away the right to live, and it still is an alive, unborn baby that should have a chance at life, even if it is of a minority, has a disability, or is discriminated against in other ways (“Abortion ProCon.org”).
