From far and wide I welcome you all, your presence here today is a true testament to the leader we have lost. Friends, family, guests of honor, and our noble Governor Montano, today I invite you, not only to mourn the death of a brave, noble, and devoted man but, to celebrate a life well lived. Despite the unimaginable crimes that have occurred in recent times, I ask you to remember Othello as the devoted husband of Desdemona, our noble leader of Cyprus, and a brave warrior. As his former lieutenant and greatest admirer, I feel deeply humbled and honored to be here today, in this mighty castle, eulogizing the mightiest of men. Although of Venetian descent, I urge you all to accept our late leader as one of us… a true Cypriot. Although my love for Desdemona was that of my sister, my admiration for Othello’s nobility was that of my father.
Today, rank means nothing. I am one with you people as you are with me. Bond by our admiration and respect for Othello’s nobility in our great city. In my time on the battlefield, upon the sea, and in service of Governor Montano, I have never met a man of higher standards or greater sense of nobility to one’s state. I remember, most vividly, the night before Othello was called upon to ward off the now-decimated Turkish army. The noble Othello diverted meaningless bloodshed between Roderigo and Brabantio. Not through the use of his ever-capable swordsmanship but, through the sense that violence was not the answer and their rank and status would reflect a resolution, he said “Put away your swords. Sir, your age and status inspire more respect than your weapons do.” Hand in hand with the Moor’s nobility is his bravery and courage, a true credit to his name.

Before ruling such an exquisite city as Cyprus became Othello’s reality, he lived a warrior’s life of bravery and courage. A testament to his military prowess was his selection by the Duke of Venice to defend the land under which he now lays. He had no business rushing away from a life of peace and tranquillity, to grow old with his lovely Desdemona. From horrors that shouldn’t be summoned in one’s wildest dreams to the battles that proved challenging to the most hardened of soldiers, Othello has faced it all. Yet, there was never a moment of doubt in the man’s heart. He had no choice but to be brave. In every aspect of the late Moor’s life, his bravery and courage shone through. From the battlefield to his marriage and most recently his leadership of Cyprus, it was evident his life reflected this. For many, marriage is followed by weeks of honeymooning; not Othello. The night of his marriage saw him leave his homeland of Venice in aid of Cyprus in an effort to defend a state we are so proud to call our own. Unknown to me then, Othello’s words “With all my heart, I’ll go right away.” would be proof he feared not death nor the service of others; Brave he was.
Despite the lowest of humanity, he had witnessed in his former life on the battlefield, Othello’s devotion, trust, and love shone brightest during his time serving Cyprus. His love for the darling Desdemona was unlike anything in this world. The happiness he brought her! And the companionship he had for me, from the battlefield to the castles of Cyprus, I grew to know him as brother Othello. Unfortunately, as we have come to learn, Othello was a man who loved too much and trusted too dearly. The powers that be saw fit to abuse his devotion and place his trust in the disgraced Iago. My friends, the devil’s hand was involved in the truly evil plan that saw Iago manipulate Othello to commit a crime that he regretted instantly.
Now, I am in no position to look down upon the actions Othello carried out under the influence of Iago. Hell, Iago had me under his devilish spells! Iago’s dark magic was hard to perceive, often playing on Othello and my insecurities. Saying what we wanted to hear. I can only sympathize with my dear Othello, ending the life of the woman he loved most in this world… oh how the devil plays tricks!
Husband, moor, warrior, governor, my brother. Your ship has sailed, your race has been run and you have been laid to rest. Let you go on in another life and reconnect with your beloved Desdemona. You have left this world with a legacy that would satisfy a king. Your nobility towards comrades, your courage and bravery on the battle fields, and your love and trust, my brother you have touched us all. Your memory will live on across the seven seas and throughout the lands. Family, friends, and respective guests of honor, I urge you to go forth and live your life in honor of Othello. Be noble as he was. Fight! Be brave like Othello. And lastly, love and trust like him. But I caution you, to take note of our late leaders’ downfall. Be wary of the devil's worshippers on this earth.
