To Kill A Mockingbird was directed by Robert Mulligan in 1962 in Universal Studios Hollywood. It is a rendition of the book written by Harper Lee:

The movie is set in a small town in Alabama during the 1930s- the Great Depression era. In To Kill A Mockingbird, a respected lawyer, Atticus Finch, agrees to represent Tom Robinson, an African American man accused of raping a white woman. The story is centered around Atticus finch’s six-year-old daughter, Scout, point of view.

Throughout the movie, major issues of discrimination are presented, especially within the justice system and the government's treatment towards African Americans. Tom Robison is accused of raping and beating Mayella Ewell. According to the “evidence,” Mayella Ewell was beaten badly- being left with bruises and finger marks. She was beaten by someone left-handed. Atticus Finch ends up looking into the preliminary hearing of Tom Robinson, and as a result, Finch becomes Robinson’s lawyer. Many of the town people try to discourage Finch from defended Tom Robison. Bob Ewell uses the tern ‘nigger’ in a derogatory way by calling Atticus Finch a ‘nigger lover.’ Scout fights in school because her father is defending Robinson. The town already sees Tom Robinson as guilty because of his skin color. In court, during the trial, the prosecutor gets Tom to agree that he can to choke the breath out of a woman. However, Finch counters this by asking Robinson to catch an object with his left hand. Robinson states that he is unable to because his left arm is crippled due to an accident with a cotton gin when he was twelve. This statement should have debunked the claim by Mayelle Ewell. However, the jury, after deliberating for two hours, found Tom Robinson guilty of all charges. In the movie, Finch tells Tom that he told his wife, Helen, that they would probably lose the case due to the odds stacked against Tom Robinson: a black man in Alabama. Following the trail, a deputy tells Atticus Finch that Tom Robinson has been killed. The deputy states that Robinson broke loose and ran.

The justice system failed Robinson. Not only did he have an unfair trial. He was killed “trying to escape,” and no one thought to check the credibility of the deputy nor the evidence towards his escape. To Kill a Mockingbird shed light on what it was like to be an African American man in Alabama. Racism is a murderous ideology.
