Nursing, “the profession or practice of providing care for the sick and infirmed”. Going by this definition this sounds relatively easy however, a lot of important things go on behind closed doors, it takes passion, dedication, and a lot of patience to make a good nurse. What has drawn me to the nursing profession is a curiosity about disease and a desire to help the world around me. This is also why I have chosen a career as a travel nurse! As a travel nurse, I would have a chance to go exploring all around the country and possibly abroad, meaning I will have a chance to experience new places and cultures while still doing what I love.
While my heart is caring for the world and my head is in the clouds the first thing on my list is getting to my dreams successfully, starting with the proper schooling for my BSN. I have taken extra steps in high school to make sure this is what I want to do. I have completed the CNA class provided at the High School and have received my board certification. The next step for me will be to attend Patrick Henry in the fall of 2019 to complete my pre wreck asics so I can go straight into Nursing at a four-year college in the fall of 2021 as of now I am looking to ODU for their excellent Medical Science program...

While in my CNA class, I feel like I have picked up some very essential clinical skills however, this isn’t the only thing that makes up a good nurse. According to workitdaily.com, There are at least 9 must-have skills before you can think about becoming a nurse simple skills like compassion, ethics, and communication are a must while critical thinking, attention to detail, confidence, adaptability, stamina, and commitment to development can all be improved upon as you develop as a Nurse. I believe that these skills are not just important in Nursing but in everyday life. The skills presented in this list have the potential to get you very far in not just a career but as a person in the professional world.
While travel nursing sounds like a dream there are some downsides to moving into different hospitals. Home Nurses who get paid less to do the same work cause problems within the care team and the workplace however, being able to overcome this and work as a team is very important. While many options are open to travel nurses there are some disadvantages according to bludepipes.com things like frequent job searching, paperwork, pay package changes, multi-state certifications, taxes, and benefits turn many people away from the jobs available. While this is a lot to take in I turned to travel nursing for many reasons some being getting to travel, being able to avoid Hospital politics, making new friends, the tax-free money (money received for housing, meals, travel expenses, etc.), and many more. Balancing the scales between pros and cons can be hard for some this is why travel nurses are a special breed.
One of the biggest things that draws people to travel nursing is the money. Salaries for travel nurses vary from hospital to hospital however, according to www.fastaff.com and www.bls.gov the money is worth looking into. WWW.BIS.gov has it posted that after a study done on April 17, 2019 the Median Pay for an RN is $71,730 per year or $34.48 per hour while this is still good money looking at the Occupational Outlook Handbook the Median Pay for travel nurses is up from $100,000 per year or $53.00 per hour. That’s not even including the Tax-free money given by most to all traveling companies. The tax-free money is something offered to travel nurses as a payment for or to help with housing, meals, moving expenses, transportation, etc. It is used to help with the outside cost of the job. This is a wonderful thing for travel nurses because it ends up putting more of their checks back in their pockets at the end of the day.
While travel nursing is wonderful it’s not all I plan to accomplish. While life on the road will be full of fun surprises and many adventures I eventually plan to settle down while this is an inevitable end to life on the road this isn’t where the line stops. After I have finished my career as a travel nurse I plan to sign on with either a local Hospital or a local Insurance company to review charts and work with the people around me to make sure they get the best treatment possible. This gives my family a stable Insurance policy and insures a benefits package for me while this isn’t always a given in the travel nursing career.
In summary, travel nursing is something I can see myself doing after my high school career. While Nursing itself is also an award the benefit of traveling and getting to experience new people, places, and things differently seems like it’s worth the extra work that goes into it. While Travel Nursing isn’t the only plan I have for after College it is the plan that I believe will bring me the most joy and job satisfaction.
