A good friend is always loyal to you and never lets you down, no matter how hard your relationship gets they will always be there for you. This is true in Hailsham, Ruth is sort of a sidekick to Kathy but in the story they start to distance themselves from each other. Ruth’s relationship with Tommy contributes to this tension, as Kathy quietly honed her feelings for Tommy they became more and more distant from each other. In the novel “Never Let Me Go” Kazou, Ishiguro uses many different literary devices in showing the theme of friendship and the struggle of trying to find and sustain a good friendship.
In the novel, Kazuo Ishiguro uses external conflict to show that just like in real life, friends fight, make up, support one another, and hurt each other's feelings. It was not always sunshine and rainbows with Ruth and Kathy they do not start off as close as they ended up at the end of the story. In the story she states “But in the end I managed it, and the instant I saw her again, at that recovery centre in Dover, all our differences—while they did not exactly vanish—seemed not nearly as important as all the other things: like the fact that we'd grown up together at Hailsham, the fact that we knew and remembered things no one else did”(Ishiguro 4). This shows us the first altercation to Kathy and Ruth's friendship. Everyone knew their friendship was rock, but they have many shared memories of Hailsham and that forces them to bind them together.

In the story, Iishiguro also uses internal conflict to show the struggle Kathy went through when she lost her childhood friends, Kathy wrestles with the loss of her childhood friends Ruth and Tommy, by turning to her memories of the past. She thought about the complex relationship with each one and with the Hailsham school where they grew up together. Kathy says “I lost Ruth, then I lost Tommy, but I won't lose my memories of them.” (Ishiguro 110) Kathy loses a bunch of things throughout the story, but the one thing she cant stand to see herself losing, is her memory. Kathy's flashbacks about Tommy and Ruth show us the ups and downs friendship can really be, but they also show just how enduring friendships can be.
In the novel “Never Let Me Go” Kazuo Ishiguro is bringing the ups and downs by using external conflict by showing us they were both going through tough times on the outside so they coddled each other throughout the whole trip, she said in the book “Those early months at the Cottages had been a strange time in our friendship. We were quarrelling over all kinds of little things, but at the same time we were confiding in each other more than ever.” ( Ishiguro 3) Kathy and Ruth have a relationship like sour patch kids, It's a little sour and a little sweet all at once. But it works for them, they argue remain friends they fight and remain friends they go through so much together and still maintain this sour-sweet friendship throughout the full novel.
Ishiguro uses external conflict to show that the main characters want happiness for one another they just want what's in their best interest. Kathy said in the story “and even if she didn't, what occurs to me now is that she probably knew all along, even before I did, that id become tommys carer, and that we'd give it a try” just as she's told us to in the car that day”. Ishiguro 216) Kathy is speaking to ruth as ruth is in her bed after a donation. It shows that ruth was determined to make sure tommy and ruth were happy regardless if it led to her own death.
The friendship theme echoes through modern day artistry often as we see it in movie themes, music, other books and literature. I hear it loud and clear as I listen to music and listen to certain artists, and their interpretation on friendship. The rapper NoCap states “You'll probably love me when I die, won't you?” (“Legend” by Nocap) in his rendition of his art imitating life as he talks about the friends and family that surround him. Friendships are not always sunshine but at the end you will always love your friend. This connects to” Never Let Me Go”because they always fight and make up but in the end when on their deathbeds they find a way to feel sorrow and love each other.
There is a parallelism of this friendship theme that John Stienbeck uses in the friendship of his two characters, Lennie and George, in the book Of Mice and Men. . In the book Lennie says ““I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you thats why”(Stienbeck 14) much like the two charachters in Of Mice and Men, Kathy and Ruth had each other's back no matter what was going on, they believed in each other and never turned on each other.
In conclusion, a good friend is always loyal to you and never lets you down, no matter how hard your relationship gets they will always be there for you. This is true in Hailsham, Ruth, Kathy’s sidekick start to distance themselves from each other, In the novel “Never Let Me Go” Kazou ishiguro uses many different literary devices in showing the struggle of trying to find a good friendship, it is prominent throughout and is a literature theme that is often depicted.
