Essayist and dramatist James Baldwin was brought into the world on August 2, 1924, in Harlem, New York. Baldwin begins The Fire Next time with a letter to his nephew by remembering commemoration of the marking of the Emancipation Proclamation. He tells his nephew that his granddad was eventually fixed—obliterated—by accepting that he was what white society said he was, subhuman. Baldwin indicates to his nephew; rather, he is part of another period, and another perspective.
