El Filibusterismo is a written novel by Dr. Jose Rizal, the novel itself is dark and is full of meaningful messages for us, Filipinos. The novel has a lot of tragedy and is really a serious story. According to Brodkey (n.d.), reading may change our perspective in life, our way of thinking, our beliefs, and how we feel. Upon reading the novel, as what resulted in Bal and Veltkamp's (2013, January 30) study, we may share the same feelings with the character of what we are reading I regretted reading it because it mirrors the experiences of our fellow Filipinos in the past and let us saw a glimpse on how do the Spanish friars, in the past, regulate Filipinos on their own system. Knowing a glimpse of bad regulations that happened in the past changed how I see other countries.
El filibusterismo can give you a thought of getting revenge and growing anger inside you as you read it and will leave you questioning if you will have revenge on those people you have a grudge against or if you will forgive them and arrange everything in a nicer approach. El Filibusterismo has a character, which is Simon, who is planning to have revenge against the Spanish friars who have corrupted way of the system, but in the end, it has not been executed. According to Orthofer (2011, July 11) Rizal’s own message in that scenario, when the revenge is not pushed through, is that violence is not a preferred solution in solving conflicts. In addition to that, Govier (2011) notes that there are still other approaches, aside from revenge through violence, that are less dangerous and more acceptable. Elster’s “Norms of Revenge” (1990) refers to those people who revenge as unreasonable for it was brought by the outburst of their emotions. The act of revenge has no good effect on us; We should live our lives in a more peaceful way. According to Orloff (2011, September 8), We must learn how to give our forgiveness, in which both of the parties will receive the benefit of being comfortable in life and peace of mind, We should be mindful of our every action in life as well on how we socialize with other people. Just imagine how we can happily live our life in contentment with the people around us, how peaceful it is to live in a world full of wise and compassionate people, With that we can say that we have altered our burst of anger into peace and on a calmer kind of feeling. Forgiveness is the best choice than revenge for being vengeful has never been the right choice, revenge in a harmful way will never give you real contentment in life unlike the power of forgiveness (Orloff, 2011, September 8).
