‘Citizen Kane’ was a thematic film, based on the life and legacy of Charles Foster Kane a powerful man who owned and control journalism. He owned the biggest newspaper company during the beginning time of World War I. An era that was controlled by ‘yellow journalism’ and Kane being the biggest one of all. The movie starts with Citizen Kane taking his last breath, and murmuring the name of someone or something under his breath saying “Rosebud”. The name brought a lot of curiosity around the world. Everyone wondered what ‘Rosebud’ meant since Charles Kane was a man of wealth and power.
In the film, a journalist started to look into his past, to understand what the name ‘Rosebud’ meant and why he would say it before dying. At the end of the film, it shows a snow sled with the name ‘Rosebud’ burning in a fire with the rest of his monuments and most valuable belonging. The ‘Rosebud’ sled had been shown previously in the scene where Citizen Kane is seen playing with the sled in the snow, while his mother is signing a document to send him away to a boarding school. His mother had inherited huge fortunes which makes us believe, she had the best interest for him. I believe the Rosebud sled is shown to us in multiple clips to understand the purpose of the movie. This was to show us how this powerful man who had it all, was never happy because even though he had all the money and power in the world felt that he was not loved because everyone he loved left him throughout his life, except the sled that he held on too as something that never left him.

Citizen Kane was a powerful man in journalism during the beginning times of World War I. Which during those times the people believed everything the newspaper put out. Kane saw this as a great opportunity, to sell news to the people of America whether it was true or not. Throughout the years of his newspaper, he put news like ‘there will be no war’ and the people believed it. This era worked to his advantage because the American people saw him as a great leader with power who had the best interest of the people. Citizen Kane promised the American people the truth but when in reality he did every in his best interest. It seemed like Americans were so blind to notice the man he had become. A man who did would lie to them by putting fake news which many believe was one of the causes which lead us to World War I. Kane believed that by him putting news out he was giving the people what they wanted and he was earning their love and respect. It worked while he had the newspaper company, but he later lost it during the Great Depression, along with many other assets.
If you are a person who is interested in our history, I would recommend you to watch this film, because it teaches us a different side of this era. Many historical film or article teaches us journalism in a different perspective with this one being a great example of them. Yellow journalism plays a huge role in the film and in our country as well. By showing us how the news industry got started. This movie shows us the biggest name in America, Charles Foster Kane. Most importantly it shows us how wealth person had more power than our own president and all because of what he wrote in the newspaper.
