‘Spider-Man’ was released in 2002 and made $825 million at the global box office making this movie financially successful. Many consider it the first film to start the current trend of superhero films.

The main purpose of the movie is to be entertaining. It does this by trying to intrigue the viewer through its big budget ($139 million) and its action fight scenes that would appeal to an older audience.

As well as being entertaining the movie also includes a character who is relatable because he does not follow the typical standard of superheroes of the times. While most male superheroes were generally large and strong with a trophy wife and a well put together life Spider-Man (a teen boy from Queens) shows that there can be a vulnerable side to superheroes and shows teens how under the surface (his mask) there can always be a great deal of problems.

A key theme in the movie is relationships. Relationships are a key factor in the development of Spider-Man. This consists of his sexual relationships with characters such as Mary Jane and his relationships with his friends such as Harry Osborn. It shows the emotional turmoil that is school and teenage life. It would relate to a typical teen as the target audience.

Another key theme is responsibility, this is shown when he gains his powers and chooses to help the innocent people of his city. He also shows responsibility when he refuses to get with Mary Jane because he knows that her life would be endangered.

Tension is raised for the audience when the villain, Green Goblin, realizes that Peter is Spider-Man. This is crucial for the character development because as viewers we knew the whole time who he was, yet it was only discovered when Peter was seen with a gash on his arm after a fight between the two. This is crucial in the development of the movie and as a viewer we would think if Norman would still go on with his plan to kill Spider-Man as his son is best friends with Peter.

Overall, the target audience will enjoy this film because Spider-Man is relatable. He is a young man going through drastic changes that he has never faced before. He is not the typical superhero, large and mature, yet is presented as someone with endless problems and struggles. He is struck with financial and personal problems which make him relatable to the viewer. Despite his unique powers, Peter is always humble and looking to help people even if it harms him. His commitment to do good is what makes ‘Spider-Man’ an enjoyable movie to watch and enjoy.
