Since a long time ago, most of the people all round the world would own a minimum of one television as it is one of the basic essentials which functions as a source of reports and informations about the things happening nationally and worldwide. One of the most common uses for the television is for the entertainment provided from movies, reality shows, cartoons etc. Children’s TV programme has always been famous among young children and students as they would watch it before going to school and in their free time. As time goes on, a lot has changed in children’s TV programme and one of them is the language use. The research helps us to understand better about the connection between language use and the time periods which is shown in children’s TV programme. It is true as the language use in the different time periods are greatly different as the English language changes and develops as time goes by.

Firstly, the vocabulary used back then in the children’s TV programme are now rarely used. The English language is always developing and changes in the vocabulary will occur naturally. The vocabularies back then were mostly used to describe the things in that era and as new and improved things are developed, some of the older counterparts are destined to be removed and it causes the vocabularies connected to them become unusable. An example of this is the word ‘shunting’ used in the second episode of Thomas the Tank Engine which is used when a train pushes/pulls a train or part of a train from its main line to anotherline. In that era, steam locomotive is common and still functional but nowadays there are other options which are more effective in doing its job.

In addition, nowadays there are different English dialects used in the children’s TV programme. The dialects used in children’s TV programme was much simpler back then as it is easier for children to understand the standard American English dialect. The technology has developed well and It is easier for information to be spread and travel to most parts of the world which helps the English language to become widely known and used. Various English dialects are also learned by non-native speakers as it is an interesting way and adds variety for the English language to be spoken. Some children’s TV programme are starting to add some of the English dialects in certain episodes to distinguish certain characters. An example would be the main villain of the movie Lion King named Scar who speaks with a British accent while the other characters in the movie mainly speaks with the standard American English dialect. It was purposely done to show the arrogance of Scar as the dialect gives a sense of superiority in intellect towards Americans just like in the movie.

Moreover, there are new English words influenced by other cultures. As mentioned previously, the English language has become the global language to communicate with others. As it is used worldwide, it’s bound for development to happen depending on the place where it is used. Changes in the vocabulary and dialects are really common as non-native speakers would naturally try to make the English language comfortable for them to use. Some new English words are added to the dictionary as other cultures influenced it. The children’s TV programme are starting to adapt to these innovations and development in the English language by implementing new words in their new shows. Children are interested in new words and are up to date with the trends these days so it is easy for them to adapt to the new words used in the shows. For instance, in the 203rd episode of The Amazing World of Gumball which is titled ‘The Cringe’, the word ‘cringe’ is used in the episode to describe the awkward behavior and situation between Gumball and Hot Dog Guy as they are trying to avoid each other in the restroom. It is a really trendy word used by teenagers and kids these days as it describes their feeling when they saw someone acts weirdly or embarrassing.
