I am pursuing a career in early childhood education because I believe teaching is more than just a profession; teaching is both a calling and a passion. I have a passion for education and a desire to positively shape the minds of young learners during this pivotal time of academic and personal growth. I believe all children are unique, and it is my job to inspire my students to reach their greatest potential. I am a lifelong learner and want to spark that same desire in my own students. I will give them the tools they need to be active explorers in their own pursuits of education.

As an early childhood educator, I realize that young children are naturally curious and full of wonder. My goal is to provide a classroom where students have ample opportunities to explore and experiment with hands-on activities that allow learning through experience. I will focus on educating the whole student. Teaching to the whole student encompasses not only academics, but also character, citizenship, and confidence. I will encourage students to become responsible members of our classroom community by using strategies such as classroom chores, positive reinforcement, and classroom meetings. These strategies will provide the necessary tools that will ensure their future success in life. My role in the classroom will be to initiate, motivate, and facilitate, making our class an exciting place to quench curiosity.

I recognize that every child brings their own individual gifts to the classroom. It is my job to discover those gifts, discern their individual strengths, and ultimately build on those strengths. My curriculum will incorporate relevant themes and units that give students many opportunities to work individually or in groups. I will assess my students as they write stories, solve problems, answer open-ended questions, and participate in daily activities. I will constantly review and reflect on my objectives and assess students’ progress to adjust and align my teaching strategies. I will also model self-assessment for my students. By learning their strengths and weaknesses, they will be better able to set goals and take ownership of their learning journey.

I am aware that every student has an individualized set of needs and unique intelligence. I subscribe to Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. I will create a curriculum that offers different types of support for my students’ individual learning styles because I believe education should be equally accessible to all. I will also use the Universal Design for Learning as a guide for each of my lessons to ensure I am engaging all students, representing information in various ways, and allowing students to express their work in multiple forms. My classroom will also be culturally relevant. I believe literature is the best way to provide my students with both windows into the world and mirrors into themselves. As citizens of the world, my students will demonstrate empathy and acceptance while embracing diversity.

I believe that the most successful schools have a culture of positive school community led by strong leaders. I will strive to take on leadership roles and look for opportunities to work on committees with administrators, colleagues, and parents to make our school a better place. The most meaningful way to impact my classroom is by supporting my students’ extracurricular activities. I know from personal experience how much it means when a teacher takes time to come out to support a student outside of the classroom.

Socrates described education as “the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel”. My teaching philosophy mirrors this idea. I want to inspire my students by igniting their natural curiosity and encouraging them to be the captain of their own learning journey.
