I attended Catfish and the Bottlemen’s show at Emo’s in Austin on November 30th 2019. Originally from Llandudno, Wales, the indie rock band has apparently grown in popularity over the past decade, touring the UK, Europe, and North America. The show I attended was to debut their new album ‘The Balance’, which was released earlier this year. Only briefly hearing about this band before, I wanted to attend this concert to see if I could learn a little bit more about them and to see if they can become one of my new favorite bands.
Before the headliners appeared on stage, the fans screamed in anticipation. As soon as the band took the stage, the screams turned into roars as the crowd went wild. They wasted no time starting their first song off the setlist, called ‘Longshot’. The upbeat tempo was controlled by Benji Blackeway on electric bass and Bob Hall on drums, creating an outrageous amount of energy. This energy remained for the entire set, but was seriously felt during one of their most popular songs ‘Kathleen’, as well as the songs that followed, including ‘Soundcheck’ and ‘Pacifier’. A significant part of the show was the guitar solos performed by electric guitarist Johnny Bond, which took the energy to a whole new level.

In other concerts that I’ve been too, the energy level rises and falls, which mainly depends on how and when the artist decides to hype up the audience. However, with Catfish and the Bottlemen, their performance style can be described as fully engaged, unrestrained, 110% effort. The frontman, Van McCann, was bouncing around the stage, playing at every part of the stage possible while continuously connecting with the fans. The crowd jumped around and threw their hands in the air for the entire 90-minute show, slightly breaking in between the encore.
Emo’s live music venue can hold roughly 1700 people, and I can say with confidence that the show I attended seemed very close to that capacity. Seeing this many people packed next to each other, moving as one throughout the entire set, was an incredible experience to feel and witness. The crowd seemed to be mostly college aged, and being this age myself made the experience even more enjoyable.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this concert. I personally really enjoyed the songs that they played, and the energy felt within the venue reinforced this. Surrounding myself with a crowd that’s genuinely enjoying themselves was also a really fun experience. I wouldn’t hesitate to go to another one of Catfish and the Bottlemen’s concerts, especially now that I’m an avid fan.
