Electrical engineering projects are masterpieces, and I treat myself as an artist when I am doing a project. The soldering iron in my hand is the brush, and the heat is the paint; the data sheets are the drawing guides, and the circuit board design is the work of painting. For me, using different components to make new magic is such a thrilling thing to do. The electrical engineering field is becoming accelerating as engineers find new solutions to their problems. Limitless opportunities for innovative contributions are waiting for young electrical engineers, and I decided that I would pursue electrical engineering for the rest of my life. This process begins with my innate curiosity and the ability to find detailed problems to solve.

Falling from a treadmill is embarrassing — a personal problem to say the least. After I tumbled from a treadmill, I found multiple injuries on my arms and legs. Then when I wanted to get to the root of why I had fallen through researching online, I realized other fitness lovers also experience falls from treadmills, especially those who are older. Using my background in electrical engineering projects, I decided to design a safe controlling method by using the affordable, proven technology of ultrasonic wave detection. I came up with an idea for building a new treadmill that can detect the real-time movement of the users and can prevent them from falling. The single-chip controller I used is STM32F103. For most of the experiments I tested in the lab, I found that my controlling method was very sensitive within an 8 mm error. With this idea, I published a utility patent and paper during my undergraduate career. From then on, I began to understand how beneficial it can be to others when thought in my head becomes new technology for a product. (At XXX university, …. XXX provides … I look forward to ….) I am more than excited to have immersed myself in the field of engineering, and I can't wait to keep learning and applying myself to all the engineering problems the world has to offer. I realized that the duty of an engineer is to make the world a better place.

Along with the treadmill patent, I completed another project about an ultra-low resistance joint for connecting wires, which was also an issued patent in my sophomore year. (Will add details) With multiple trials I need to test, time management is extremely important for every project. A thoughtful plan can save me plenty of time. Before I start creating a project, I think over every step in my brain and arrange them in order of importance. It is the same as I need a composition of a picture in my mind before painting. My capstone project was about an urban E-bike. One of my tasks was soldering thirty 18650 battery cells together as a battery pack; ten cells were in series as one set and three sets were in parallel. There wasn’t a spot-welder in my lab. Thus, I tried to use metal strips to replace spot soldering, but later I found the normal soldering machine could not let solder be attached to the surface of electrodes. As a result, I soldered dots on the metal strips to form contact points. It worked, but a new problem arose when I taped the batteries together with electric tape and measured them with the multimeter; I got some unexpected zero values which indicated there is a loose point somewhere between the two ammeter pens. To fix the separate cells more tightly, I bent some paperclips to make springs to attach to the negative electrode and stuck them together by using a hot glue gun. Although the battery pack is a small part of my capstone project, I did really enjoy the process of problem-solving. I was so excited when I got the value of 42 V from the ammeter. I pride myself on my tenacity and resilience when I fail. The result proves all is worth it when I achieve the goal I set at the beginning.

Engineering work is typically busy and stressful. However, nothing comes easy in our lives. Being stressed is an asset that can accelerate the development of engineering. Last semester I was enrolled in 23 credits while doing a major project at the same time. Now when I think back to that time, I recognize it as a meaningful time in my life. Facing a lot of difficulties is like a game: the more challenges I face, the stronger and smarter I will become. When I click “start,” an exciting journey begins.

Getting involved in the engineering community through various academic seminars is a part of my campus life. I enjoyed learning something from the presenters’ work by seeing their creative thinking and ideas. I prioritize creativity since a lot of problems from projects that I will be working on have never been done in the past. I remember I was the only international student who attended a Town Hall Student Forum held by my University, which was about the campus financial budget cut. Unlike many international student peers, I willingly integrated into the engineering school culture. As a part of the community, I contributed my ideas to better the college by offering solutions to spend effectively with the budget cut.

Engineers always work with others in a team, and I value the importance of teamwork and cooperation. I am a driven engineer and leader who is ready to accomplish any task put in front of me. Every day, I continue to improve myself by putting countless hours into gaining knowledge about engineering or leadership, whether it’s in the classroom, through projects, or just reading about new topics. I hope to be a leader in innovative electrical engineering technology. I spend most of my time studying with classmates and tutoring them at libraries or labs on weekends. My happiest times are when my course work is affirmed by my classmates during the group review discussion before exams. Through interactions, I am inspired and inspire my group members at the same time. I am also happy to serve others. I volunteered in a STEM festival that let American teenagers do hands-on experiments and taught them the theories of experiments. I showed them how amazing small experiments can be with the power of engineering science. I feel that it is a privilege to be able to use my ability and enjoy this responsibility in the places where I am needed.

I envision myself as a young researcher pushing the frontier of control methods in the years to come. My enthusiasm for electrical engineering, love of challenges, and a solid background in both mathematics and engineering are well suited for the research world. I would like to be a professor in the future to guide more people in understanding how powerful engineering technology can be. Learning is a long journey, but I have not yet reached my destination. People always ask me why I choose XXX University. Apart from the fact that XXX offers XXX (Too vague for now. Need to do more research into each university I apply to and specifically talk about why they are good and a good fit), I love how passionate and hardworking people(vague) are at XXX (place name). I do want to further my studies and start the exciting new chapter of my academic journey in the U.S. at XXX University. I think it is the perfect place for people who are passionate and curious about life. I would love to attend the Electrical Engineering PhD program at XXX University and work with world-leading experts in this field. If possible, I am excited to work with Prof.XXXX and Prof.XXXXX. I plan to connect my interests with their expertise in XXX Models and Controlling. I believe XXXX will give me the tools, values, and supervision to fully realize my research potential. I live for what I love and work hard for it. Nothing makes me happier than devoting myself to my love and passion for electrical engineering.
