Maturity is gained when a person knows how to prioritise others before themselves. From “To kill a Mockingbird” the viewer is able to identify triggering events in which the main character, Scout, ventures through as she grows to maturity. Most of the novel is concerned with Scout's maturing, but it happens more through specific events than as a gradual process. In Chapter 9 Scout is brought to her limits because of Cecil Jacobs as he has accused her father of defending n****rs. This accusation makes her forget that Atticus has promised to “wear out” Scout if she tries to fight others. Through the use of imagery and first person P.O.V shown in “I drew a bead on him, remembered what Atticus had said, then dropped my fists and walked away... It was the first time I ever walked away from a fight” demonstrates characteristic streaks of maturity in Scout as she walks away from a fight. Although Scout returns to her old ways soon after this incident, she recognises her failure in obeying Atticus. After her cousin Francis had insulted Atticus, Scout cannot control herself enough to not strike him in the mouth. But, she does demonstrate a certain level of maturity in trying to keep her father from more anxiety about the Tom Robertson case.
In another scenario where we see maturity come from Scout is during Chapter 15. Scout, Jem, and Dill find themselves between guarding the jail and the angry mob. Scout defuses the situation by appealing to Walter Cunningham Sr. by talking about entailments and his son, her schoolmate, Walter Jr. Through the use of personification shown in “Atticus had said it was the polite thing to talk to people about what they were interested in, not about what you were interested in. Mr. Cunningham displayed no interest in his son, so I tackled his entailment once more in a last-ditch effort to make him feel at home.” From this we are able to have a literal and metaphorical meaning of Scout “Tackling” the issue at the jail. Maturity is distinguished from Scout paying more attention to Mr. Cunningham's feelings than her own. In so doing, this sympathy helps to convince Walter Sr. and the rest of the mob to disperse.
Another relevant example of where Scout has grown from an event is when she began to understand and realise the injustice that was given to Tom Robertson. She didn't understand this before, but now that she is maturing, she realizes just what it meant. Through Scout showing her thoughts and understanding the viewer is able to see how Scout has taken an event and shown a critically thought out understanding, shown in, 'How could this be so, I wondered, as I read Mr. Underwood's editorial. Senseless killing. Tom had been given due process of law to the day of his death, he had been tried openly and convicted by twelve good men true, my father had fought for him all the way. Then Mr. Underwood's meaning became clear: Atticus had used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret courts of men's hearts Atticus had no case. Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed.' This reveals that Scout has used her knowledge from her mistakes and information she has gained to her journey to maturity to figure out what it really means to be in the real world. It is through the use of visual techniques that we are able to diffuse controversial events through a child's eye, by doing this we can evaluate the ways Scout was able to keep up with being in a world where she knew everything too soon.
