Everyone gets jealous at some point in their lives, all humans show jealousy in different ways. It can be very dangerous and can turn people against each other because sometimes want what someone else has. With all the peer pressure in the town of Salem, this major sin of envy causes great stress on the characters and the town, but when no one takes initiative the characters start to disappear. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, he uses two characters to present one of the sins in the Bible. As two strong and relevant characters in the story, Abigail Williams and Ann Putnam let envy take over their souls and begin to hurt them quickly.

Ann Putnam is a well-known woman in Salem, but jealousy does no good in helping her. Rebecca Nurse has been blessed with many children but because Ann Putnam has had multiple miscarriages and has lost some children at birth, envy makes Ann ruin their relationship. When all of the town is trying to figure out what is happening with the girls, Ann begins to think it is Rebecca Nurse because she delivered the deceased children that Ann tried to bring into the world. “But I must! You think it God’s work you should never lose a child, nor grandchild either, and I bury all but one? There are wheels within wheels in this village, and fires within fires” (I 1111). Ann lets envy influence her thoughts on what might be going on in the town of Salem. Ann is always looking for someone else to blame for her misfortune and bitterness, and at this moment she decides to blame Rebecca's nurse. “ You think it God’s work you should never lose a child, nor grandchild either, and I bury all but one?” ( I )

The other person who lets envy break her is Abigail Williams and with her current reputation, it is not doing her any good. When this quote is stated, Abigail is doing everything she can to break apart John and Goody Proctor. “You drank a charm to kill John Proctor's wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor” (I 1107). Abigail wants John so she wishes for Goody Proctor to die so she can have. Abigail also dreams of being with John every night and is struggling to grasp John not loving her so she tries to guilt him into loving her and states, “She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like” (I 1110).

As proven, Ann Putnam and Abigail Williams have much jealousy towards other characters in Miller's Play. Jealousy occurs when people start comparing themselves to others causing relationships to break. In today’s world, jealousy is an emotion that continues to take a short wicked presence in our lives. Abigail could have saved the town from much chaos if she would have left the other characters alone. Envy exists in our world because people feel insecure about themselves and want what the next person has. Imagine how different the world would be if everyone was okay with what they have.
