The book, The Crucible by Arthur Miller is based on a true-life story in the year 1692. It shows how life back in the day was horrible because they had strict laws from the church and no laws to protect them in court. Now the people put new laws to protect the citizens in court. The reason that this happened in Salem Massachusetts is that It was a society that was too strict and that the girls were scared to confess the third one is that the girls would have to lie so that they wouldn't get hanged. If Salem’s society wasn’t so strict, the girls would not have lied leading to the deaths of innocent people; fortunately, today’s society has laws to protect the innocent.
In Salem, Massachusetts, the society was too strict, and when the society was strict people disobeyed the law just like in the book. The girls in Salem Massachusetts went to the forest and danced and did witchcraft and Abigail Williams stripped down naked and started dancing. In Salem, the laws came from the church so they were only church-based what sin was, and what sin was back in the day was more than it is today because they were way too religious, The people couldn't dance, and it was obvious to not do witchcraft even nowadays the church would disallow witchcraft, all they can do is praise god. The judges were getting close to finding out that they were doing witchcraft they started to lie about how people made them do witchcraft. “Abigail: I never called him! Tituba, Tituba... Parris, blanched: She called the Devil? Hale: I should like to speak with Tituba `` (pg:42 act 1) She did this because she was going to get caught. Tituba didn’t have any laws to protect when they were talking to her.
Today citizens have Miranda rights, the Miranda rights are what protect the people in court. If the people didn’t have these rights it would be like the Salem witch trials and how the people would believe the first person who lies about something. The Miranda rights were given to the citizens in 1966. The rights say 'You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney, if you cannot get one, one will be given to you” (Legal Zoom). Now people lie but 95% of the time they lose because Miranda rights protect the accused. The Crucible shows how and why citizens need Miranda rights and they don't know what will happen again and again and again. Miranda rights keep innocent people from dying.
The girls were scared to confess what they did in the forest and there were no spirits. They would say and lie that people were doing witchcraft on them and that they sent their souls upon them. They did this to marry Warren. Abigail, looking about in the air, clasping her arms about her as though cold: I - I know not. ¨A wind, a cold wind, has come. Her eyes fall on Mary Warren. Mary Warren, terrified, pleading: Abby! Mercy Lewis, shivering: Your Honor, I freeze! Proctor: They’re pretending! Act Three 109 Hathorne, touching Abigail’s hand: She is cold, Your Honor, touch her! Mercy Lewis, through chattering teeth: Mary, do you send this shadow on me? Mary Warren: Lord, save me! Susanna Walcott: I freeze, I freeze! Abigail, shivering visibly: It is a wind, a wind! MARY Warren: Abby, don’t do that! Danforth, himself engaged and entered by Abigail: Mary Warren, do you witch her? I say to you, do you send your spirit out? With a hysterical cry, Mary Warren starts to run. Proctor catches her. Mary Warren, almost collapsing: Let me go, Mr. Proctor, I cannot, I cannot - Abigail, crying to Heaven: Oh, Heavenly Father, take away this shadow!¨ (pg 108-109 crucible). They all lied and said she was sending her spirit and the judges believed her. It was so easy and they didn’t take married words because she didn't lie about it. Nowadays they let the people talk and they give you lawyers to have a better chance of winning. There was no juryś back then too so it was just the judges. You don't know if the judges are biased about the other person. The Judges went already with other trials and Abigail won so they already believed her when it was the other innocent people who said they didn't do witchcraft.
Today the judges don’t get to choose who is guilty or not. It’s the jury who gets to choose and in Salem, they didn’t have a jury all they had was the judges and the judges had to choose. The judges, in the beginning, weren’t biased until Abigail started to lie and started saying that they were witches and that they were sending spirits at her. So now after going through trials with the girls, they started to get more biased toward the innocent so the people would be killed for no reason. These days the innocent won’t have to die for no reason because they have a jury that can't be biased because of the laws. The laws that the people have made have changed the world and have made it better, we don’t have to see innocent people die like in Salem. The laws save the world but also kill it The world has to be careful not to have too many laws Then it will be too strict like Salem and then people will want to break them. The laws we have brought aren't from the church so it’s not as if you can’t dance or you can’t miss church. There are the simple ones like you can’t steal, kill, etc.
The last one is that the girls would have to lie to not get hanged themselves because of the laws. If the laws weren’t so strict they wouldn’t have to lie and innocent people wouldn’t have to die. The people now don’t have to lie because of the strict consequences. The consequences now are just jail time and the penalty of death but that happens when you kill someone. The world has changed from Salem Massachusetts to now it has changed by law and how we do law. The law is not church law anymore it's just law. The consequences and Miranda rights have come into place.
The laws have changed and so have the consequences some new stuff has come to the law and a lot has left the people to have more rights. The world has grown to give people second chances and to help them.
