“Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living” – Miriam Beard.
It may be very cliche to say that travel has the power to change and inspire but as cliche as it may be, it's also very true. From a young age, I have been fascinated by travelling and exploring the sights which I never knew even existed. The endless possibilities of places to visit and sites to explore have intrigued me. Growing up I was fortunate to travel around the places with my family which allowed me to broaden my horizon and shape my personality.

When I travel to different countries, I get excited to experience a new culture and their norms. I believe that's exhilarating because when I experience something new for the first time, I transition into an individual full of life and vitality - just like kids. My adventurous trip to Thailand still seems like a fantasy. Thailand is also known as the ‘Land of Smiles’. A country that is completely different from ours is waiting for us, a new breed of people and a completely new experience. I hold on to the armrests of the airplane seat as it gained enough speed and finally lifted off. overpowered by exhaustion, I fell into a deep, profound sleep. The next morning, I am awakened by a stewardess announcing to fasten the seat belts as we are approaching near the airport. I remember thinking we have landed in a strange city by mistake. Everything seems distinctly odd. There is something different in the air and I seemed to be the only person who could perceive it. The strange new environment convinces me to go back home, however we drive through the city of Bangkok to reach our final destination. I shift my gaze from the street food stalls to the strange lined faces of the street sellers and passers-by, to the bright colors of tuk-tuks, to the constant traffic jams and of course the glorious religious temples. After viewing the alluring beauty of Bangkok, the odd feeling turns into excitement. We spend the first night exploring the city called Sukhumvit. A city that is full of chaos, noise and the briny smell of Thai food. We are wandering through the streets to find a halal restaurant. My father begins to ask the local people to help us locate the restaurant. We come across a tuk-tuk driver who is unable to communicate in English yet he goes above and beyond to help us find the restaurant. That night I realized that no matter what language someone speaks, two willing humans can always find a way to communicate with each other. I enter the restaurant and occupy a table near the giant aesthetic sea green painting. I look around to witness the differences between people only to find out that we aren’t so different. We all have a family we love and care about, jobs to go to during the day, and people are generally nice to each other regardless of their backgrounds. If I only rely on media, I would probably never have enjoyed an experience like this.
Next, we are on our way to Phuket. Phuket is a magical island filled with many kinds of beauty, from the beaches and coastlines to the mountains and jungles, to even the people all around us, with their various skin colors and smiles. I quickly take a glance around to appreciate the nature and its wonders. We hire a guide and spends the day on our e-bikes, clambering up some of the biggest temples and taking way too many photos. But the highlight of the trip is the time I spend with my family, something which has become so rare now. After an exhausting day full of wonders and waves of laughter, I come to the conclusion that travelling allows you to have time for family bonding and unleashes our creative human characteristics
I catch myself gazing at a gloomy pink sky waiting for the loud noise of thunder and pattering of raindrops. In that brief moment, I observe how travelling around the places in Thailand not only fills my soul with joy but also helps me to gain control of my anxiety by giving me control over my life. When travelling, I find myself having to face my fears on a daily basis — after all, I was terrified of everything. While I could just run away from them, it got to the point where I no longer wanted to. So, I willingly go on a boat ride instead of standing alone, having my family go and I survived. I realized that it wasn’t really all that hard. I try weird kinds of seafood without getting food poison and I survive. I swim into the deep blue sea without getting eaten by a shark and I survive. After many bold, brave and daring decisions. It occurs to me that travel, adventuresome and thoughtful travel, forces you to conquer your fears in order to live life to the fullest and helps you build the best version of yourself through experiences of discovering.
My trip to Pattaya truly opens my eyes and changes my perspective. I finally get to witness the reason as to why Thailand is known as the ‘Land of Smiles’. As I walk through the streets The friendliness of strangers teaches me to be compassionate. People who had never spoken to me knew nothing about me and didn’t owe me a thing would repeatedly go out of their way to help me. I am across the girl who approaches me when I am lost on the streets of Taichung and take me to her stall to give me a cup of tea and help me figure out where I am going. There is the girl in a cotton candy shop whom I’d spoken to for five minutes when she offered me bought candy for me as a sweet gesture since I was a tourist. There was a man in Thailand. who helped me push my luggage to safety while we were being evacuated after the tsunami — not knowing if he was endangering his life in doing so. Time and time again, I’ve been astounded by the friendliness and compassion that has been shown to me by people who had no idea who I was and had no reason to ever help me. It’s changed me. Now, I try not to judge anyone I meet, instead of thinking only about ways in which I can help other people, and repay the kindness that has been shown towards me.
