Poverty is when you do not have enough materials to support basic human needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. Types of poverty are situational, generational, absolute, relative, urban, and rural. Approximately 3 billion people are living in poverty today and that is almost half of the world's population. Most of these people are living off $2:50 a day or less.
Poverty can affect a person physically and mentally. It is devastating how many people are living in it on an everyday basis and how it can change people. It can affect people by getting sick and an unhealthy weight. You would get more illnesses more frequently and your body would get weaker and deteriorate. Causes of poverty can be because the person does not have a job so they would earn no money and wouldn't be able to pay for food or shelter. Also, some children can be born into poverty by their parents. They can't get a job because people don't want to employ them or they don't want to get a job. People can also become poor when they get a poor education when they are younger so when they are older they can't get a sustainable job. Evan climate change can affect people's living arrangements, for example, water scarcity and flooding can severely affect the area you are living in.
Columbia is one of the poorest countries in the world about 34% of people who live in Columbia still live under the poverty line and more than 3 in 10 children live in poverty in everyday life. Columbia taxes are inequitable which means they are unfair. In 2017 Columbia had the highest rate of unemployment and 30% of people don't have sustainable or safe homes to live in. More than 12.7 million people live on less than $2 per day which is way below average. A reason why Columbia is poor is because the government distributes the money unequally depending on what job you do so some people get paid extremely well and others don't. 68% of people who are living in poverty in Columbia suffer from overcrowding which makes it harder to support about 7 children who live in one house and don't even get paid a basic wage.
Many people in this world live in poverty just like this little girl named Luisa who is 11 years old and had to share a 3-bedroom apartment with her mum, stepdad, and 9 other family members. Her stepfather lost his job in construction and her mother hasn't been able to get a job that lasted. The family relies on the soup kitchen for food and donations of clothing from neighbors. One day her friends saw her at a soup kitchen and they never spoke to her afterwards. A person asked her what she would like to change in the future and her answer was “I would like to change the world, to do what I can to help people, to help the poor and give them what they need. Everybody will have a stable house. Everybody will be well and nobody will be in need”.
People to this day don't realize how many people live in poverty and how much it can affect someone's social, mental, and physical health. Many people live like Luisa in Spain and any other suburban countries or even the world. To help these people you can do as little as donating old clothing, blankets, money, or food that will last.
