Latin America has increasingly become a struggling country in recent years. Economic decline in within the country has been steadily on the rise since the 1980’s. This decline has brought with it shortages of valuable resources within these communities. It is because of this that NGO’s, Non-governmental Organizations, have been taking action in local Latin American communities for the benefit of its peoples in many different ways. Examples of these are positions such as educators, organizers, or bearers of information, money, or supplies such as food and clothing. These NGO’s are seeking to establish a means of allowing the communities to access resources they would struggle to find otherwise. This, in turn, can allow for growth and development which creates incentives and opportunities more readily accessible to the poor families within these countries. Poverty can be described as an inability to affect or control resource distribution within a family, community, or country. The role of charitable organization is to work within the existing structures and to empower these communities to develop their own structures and constitutions that allow them to grow when charities are otherwise unable. Although the goals of both the local community and international donors is the same their ideas of what poverty is and how it should be combatted differ. Neither of these views are inherently wrong and have provided much for Latin American communities over the years. NGO’s have been a very important part of Latin America for the past fifty years and have only increased in number in the past two decades. The resources gained from these NGO contributions have been incredibly important and are furthering the quest to help the people who live there to identify and resolve some of the issues within their communities.
In “Here to Help: NGOs Combating Poverty in Latin America : NGOs Combating Poverty in Latin America,” by Robyn Eversol was published in 2016 and is, therefore, a recent work that should be dependable time-wise. However, there may be certain changes that have occured in the last 2-3 years that need to be considered when reviewing the information in this document. This source helps to answer certain questions of what charities are doing within these poor countries to help the communities that live there by providing sources examples of real life events from real life organizations. This source is attempting to show what most other reports on the same subject are saying and are attempting to promote charity and help for the country. Robyn Eversol is the Director of the Institute for Regional Development at the University of Tasmania in Australia and is an anthropologist of development. She is accredited and knowledgeable in her field. Eversol is laying bare the facts and effects both economically and socially of certain charities within the communities of certain Latin American countries by specific european charities.
