In the introduction, here we can see ample movements in American literature because of Edgar Allan Poe's works. First of all, I want to mention what is symbolism. Symbolism is a literary method that uses symbols, whether it is words, characters, marks, places, or abstract ideas, to express things beyond the literal meaning. It first originated in France. However,- American writer Edgar Allan Poe contributed many things in this way of writing. After Poe's works, even French writers such as Charles Baudelaire were inspired by his works. Edgar Allan Poe has two important meanings in the history of American literature and the history of American culture. First, it turned short stories into a genre that had a major impact on American literature and publications throughout the 19th century. Until now, his stories and critiques have been a role model and guide for this typical American writer. Anyone interested in short story form cannot ignore his ideas or novels. Poe was influential in making American literature more philosophical and metaphysical than ever. Second, and perhaps most importantly, Poe helped make magazine publishing more important in American literary culture. American writers in the mid-19th century were often put off by the readability of British novels. The lack of a copyright law makes the works of great British writers readily available at low cost. Therefore, American writers cannot compete in this genre. Periodicals and short stories, which are the most popular genre in this medium, are America's way of fighting back. Poe is an important figure in this battle to make America a literary force in world culture. Poe is owner of many short stories and poems. One of them is 'The Raven'. The main idea of 'The Raven' - is that pain can change your mind and make you feel trapped. The grieving speaker was forced to lose his mind by his grief, realizing that he had lost his lover and could never forget death. It symbolizes the storyteller who lost his beloved Lenore. The crow represents evil and death. The crow is also a symbol of the pain of the storyteller and the wisdom of the storyteller through communication. Poe said that the raven itself is a symbol of sadness, specifically, it represents 'sadness and endless memories.' He deliberately chose a raven over a parrot (a bird known for its ability to speak) because he believes ravens are better suited to the dark tone of the poem. He mostly used the method of symbolism in his poems and short stories. One of its most symbolic short stories of Poe is ' The Masque of the Red Death'. It was published in 1842. The story is about a Prince whose name is Prospero and his attempts against Red Death. Its genre is horror. And original title of it is 'The Mask of the Red Death: A Fantasy'. Then it was altered to ' The Masque of the Red Death '. As I mentioned above, Edgar Allan Poe uses symbolism in most of his poems and stories to force readers to see his views on life, religion, love, and death. He showed a lot of himself in his work. His views are reflected in his role and his use of symbolism allows for a broader interpretation. In my coursework, I will give you information about Edgar Allan Poe and his symbolic works like I did above.
