It is natural for humans to have the tendancy to explore things that we don't know or see. Exploring the unknown is important to the world because without having the freedom to explore, people would not know how to be human. Space exploration is a way for humans to get out the need to explore. The benefits fo exploring Mars outweigh the risks because, Mars gives us the freedom to explore when we need to.
First, people think that exploring space is a waste of time and money, but it helps us in ways not everyone realizes. The story states,' Others argue that a successful space program adds to our national prestige, helps the economy, creates jobs, and improves national security,'(Koerth-Baker 153). This shows that space exploration can help people who need it. This also shows that space exploration can help the world in ways we didn't think it could.
Second, boredom has mentally and physically effected people in strange ways. The story states,' ... The isolation can lead to strange behavior. Suedfled told me he has heard about Antarctic researchers venturing outside in 40-below
weather without proper clothing and without telling anyone else they were going out. The diaries of early polar explores are full of tales of extreme boredom, depression and desperate attempts at entertainment reminiscent of prisoners' stories from solitary confinement. An important leeson that Antarctica can impart on a Mars expedition is this: even scientists on important missions can get excruciatingly bored,' (Koerth-Baker 155). This proves that boredom can affect people in ways that could severely hurt them, which shows how bad boredom is to space exploration. This also helps infer that boredom can affect more than just astronauts.
Third, even though there are bad parts to exploring space, scientists are still finding ways to fix those problems. The story claims,' And so some researchers have learned to actively fend off boredom by creating what you might call a unique office culture. They celebrate a ridiculous number of holidays, both traditional and invented.You need something to look forward to, Suedfeld says, and planning the events helps cahnge the routine,'(Koerth-Baker 156). This proves that there are multiple solutions to fighting off boredom because it is a major problem. This also shows that boredom is only one of space explorations problems, so it must be fixed.
Lastly, the minds ability to want to wander and explore is so important that if the mind was not allowed to, it would not be able to function like a normal mind. The story states,' It might sound absurd, but many scientists say strategies like this are necessary because, without proper mental stimulus, we risk making a physically and technologically challenging endeavor into a psychologically grueling one. It would be catastrophic if humanity's greatest voyage were brought low by the mind's tendency to wander when left to its own devices,'(Koerth-Baker 156). This shows that all of human kind depends on space exploration for the minds mental state. It also shows that if the access to space exploration was not allowed, the whole world would fall apart and all of human kind would go mentally insane.
Space exploration has good and bad sides, but the good sides overpower the bad due to the outcomes. In conclusion, the benefits of exploring Mars outweigh the risks, because when we need it, Mars is there to give us the freedom to explore.
