I didn’t understand until now, that fear is not always a harmful emotion and that you don’t have to fear the unexpected because it’s the very thing that could bring out the best in you. It all started at West Port High School when I was seconds away from performing my project piece for my Dance Repertory class. It was one of the last to show because my class and I had to travel from the classroom to the school’s auditorium. Ms. J said, “Okay class put on your shoes because Ndieya you’re up”. Heading to the auditorium, I was feeling good and a little excited to present my choreography piece. I said to myself, “Ndieya, you got this, easy A”, but nothing could have prepared me for what was waiting on the other side of that door.
“THUMP, THUMP, THUMP”. It was the sound of my beating heart. When I opened the door, my eyes got so big… my stomach got so tight, and my heart hit the floor, BOOM! My classmates took the words right out of my mouth, “OH…MY…GOD!”. Half the school was in the auditorium. I had completely forgotten, there was testing going on. All my nerves were flooding in like a tsunami wave. I said to myself, “Ndieya… you have only one shot”. I had to give it my all. As I walked up to the top of the auditorium, I could feel their confused yet curious eyes crawling on me. I can hear my classmates cheering me on. I took a deep breath… and so I began. I heard nothing but the music playing in my mind. I wasn’t even nervous anymore. All I felt was the raging excitement bursting inside of me, anxious to get out… There was a moment of silence… Then, the entire auditorium was clapping for me. Words couldn’t express the feeling that was inside me. I then realize that fear… is not real. Will Smith once said, “God places the best things in life on the other side of terror”. He was right.

Don’t fear the other side of terror. I am not afraid of the unexpected. If anything, I welcome it. On this day, I realized that no matter how deep that confidence, that inner beast inside of you is, it will surface when you need it the most. So, if you ask me how I did it, I would say, “Fear was my motivation”.
