A true-story based film about three African-American women who works at segregated NASA as ‘human computers’, together with other black ladies of the West Computing group. These amazing women created a history. Their works with the calculations and other stuffs have contributed in one of the biggest events in the early 60’s during the Space Race between America and Russia. The 2016 film was directed by Theodore Melfi, starring Taraji Henson as Katherine Goble Johnson, Octavia Spencer as Dorothy Vaughan and Janelle Monáe as Mary Jackson. Other actors are: Kevin Costner as Al Harrisson, Kirsten Dunts as Vivian Mitchell, Jim Parsons as Paul Stafford, Glen Powell as John Glenn and Mahershala Alibas as Jim Johnson. These are the people, together with other folks, behind this mind blowing and uplifting film, that every single person in the entire world should see. The 2 hours, 6 minutes and 43 seconds I spent on watching the movie is not a waste of time, it is worth it. I laughed, cried, got inspired and most especially learned and realized things concerning math, science and life.
‘Hidden Figures’ tells about how NASA worked on their way to send a rocket into space to orbit the moon. It was a great operation they aimed to succeed to win the Space Race with Russia. A big challenge and also a big work. During that time, colored people are segregated with white ones in terms of working areas, bathrooms and even cafeterias. It was the situation of the black female mathematicians who work behind the scenes for the necessary mathematics for launch and landing of NASA's rockets — Katherine, Dorothy and Mary are part of it. One day, because the Space Task Group needed a mathematician with analytic geometry for Friendship 7 with John Glenn as an astronaut, Catherine, a math genius, got her break. Besides her, Dorothy and Mary and the rest of the girls were also part of the project. This is truly a story that needs to be told. The story of how black and white, man and woman will take man into space.

The movie clearly focused mainly with math and science, as well as life, or I should also say, science and engineering. That science will be impossible to be explained without math, because it is its' language. In this film, math played a major and crucial role whether the launch, orbit and landing will be a success. Proper numbers and formulas are very important. Mathematics is changing every single time, so as the calculations, as mentioned. Aside from the math and science side, the movie is also sending a message to the viewers, that no matter who and what you are, we are people with value and can do something great that will create a big impact.
Since the movie is about rocket launches, space and other stuff science, that requires a very good special effects and editing. And with regards to that, ‘Hidden Figures’ nailed it! They do not just tell how the story goes, they show it with the use of props, effects and a good editing, which made the movie realistic, as it is in the actual space and field.
Honestly, after watching the film, I became more in-loved with science and math. Before, whenever I hear rockets, I always say it is about science. But I was wrong, because science works together with math, and vice versa. It is not just pure science. I have gained a lot of new, fun and amazing facts about how science, technology, engineering and mathematics work together in making extraordinary things; in making the impossible possible.
Sounds like I enjoyed the movie and learned a lot from it? You are definitely right, I do. Therefore, I give this movie the highest rating and advise everyone to watch it.
