When I started swimming for my local summer swim team ten years ago, I had no idea how engulfed my life would be by it. From my summer swim team to my high school career, my swim community has become a significant part of my life and I have become a significant part of it.

My swim community has become my second family over the years, and it consists of my summer team, high school team, and friends across the county. If my mom had never signed me up for the summer team when I was seven, I do not know where I would be today. All of my friendships are by-products of the swimming community through bonding over getting through hard sets at practice and playing games when we waited for the older swimmers to finish warm-ups before the meets.

The Kittatinny Barracudas summer swim team was the first place where I learned what competitive swimming was and how I could be part of a team. Even though it was in the summer, I looked forward to going to practice every day and seeing my summer friends. Every other year I was the oldest in my age group, and I would help out the newer swimmers in my age group become accustomed to the new concepts we had to learn such as flip turns. As the years went by, I became more involved with the team by helping set up the concession stand and staying after my practices to help the youngest level of swimmers learn how to swim competitively. The summer leading up to my freshman year of high school was the season that got me ready for what to expect on the high school team.

The first year of the high school swim team was not easy since I was not used to swimming for longer than 45 minutes and having mandatory out-of-pool workouts after practices. Even though it was a change, I was excited to make

The summer leading up to my freshman year of high school was the season that got me ready for what to expect on the high school team.

The first year of the high school swim team was not easy since I was not used to swimming for longer than 45 minutes and having mandatory out-of-pool workouts after practices. Even though it was a change, I was excited to make new friends and see my summer swim friends during the school year. Being a freshman who had swum before high school, I was the leader in my lane during practices because some of my teammates had never swum on a team before. If they did not understand a drill I was able to teach them. My sophomore season was even better because I knew what to expect, and the seniors were great captains. Junior year was great, but some of us had to step up and help lead the team because the senior captains were not good at communicating or connecting with the team. The other juniors and I took on the role of captain, and we made sure to include everyone on the team during pasta parties and meets. At the Hunterdon Warren Sussex, championship meets, I stepped in as a mock assistant coach because one of my coaches was unable to go. I did not make a time cut for the meet, but I went anyway to support my teammates. I cannot wait to see what my senior swim season will bring now that I am a captain with some exciting plans for the team.

Every summer swim season since my freshman year, I have become less involved due to my lifeguarding schedule. However, I still make practices when I can, and I try to make more than half the meets during the season because I love the team. Even though I have not been as involved, I have enjoyed the past three seasons immensely because I know swimmers from other high schools around my county through being on the summer team with them and swimming against them during the high school season. These people also make the high school season more enjoyable because we can talk to each other during dual meets and championship meets.

Each part of my swim community will be hard for me to let go of starting with the high school team and ending with saying goodbye to my friends before we all head off to college at the end of the summer. Leading up to this year each season I have had to say goodbye to the senior classes, but it will be harder this year since I will be saying goodbye to everyone in my community, not just a small portion. I will make sure that my last high school and last summer seasons are the most memorable before the hard goodbyes.
