From day one in the Air Force, you are inevitably reciting the Air Force core values. They go from a jumbled mess of words to phrases, and then to actual ways of living your day-to-day life. To me, everyone sees the core values differently and has their own different take on them. I believe my personal values of humor, cleverness, adventure, punctuality, and stability were molded from the Air Force core values and I will explain why.

Beginning with humor and cleverness. I use humor predominantly to make difficult situations more bearable. It can also be used to bring a group of random people together to work as a team. I also believe that cleverness helps me in these situations. It can enhance my creativity when working with a group of people.

Cleverness to me is a way to think of things from a different angle. Sometimes I use cleverness as a way to remember something for the future or it could trigger me to think about something in a new light. Both humor and cleverness to me are the Air Force's core values of “Excellence in all we do”. Something I had to learn when joining the Air Force was working together with people I didn't know. So for me to be excellent in all I did I had to find ways to work with people I didn't know and humor and cleverness were my way of accomplishing that. Because the Air Force is always changing and coming up with new processes to enhance the everyday mission and teamwork is an enormous part of this.

I firmly believe in taking on new opportunities when they present themself. Whether it's training opportunities, deployments, networking, or any other thing you can think of, the Air Force is a great avenue for an adventurous person. I tend to find myself smack dab in the middle of new ways of doing things, especially at work. I believe my sense of adventure is to blame for this. For example, my last deployment started with leadership asking me “Are you good with numbers? Do you want to deploy somewhere? Do you want to fly on a plane?” I believe my answer to them at the moment was “of course” and I was out the door in a couple of weeks. Along with adventure is punctuality. “If you are on time you are late” is hands down one saying from the military I have taken on in full. Being early for almost everything I am a part of is essential to me. I believe this helps me to organize myself before meetings, ceremonies, or anything I have to show up for.

To me punctuality and adventure both play an important role in the Air Force's core value of “Service Before Self”. Even though I see deployment or TDY as an awesome thing, when I take a step back and look I realize that I am volunteering to send myself to a sometimes foreign country where I’m not welcome. Also, this means sometimes taking the time I would otherwise have off to come in early and make sure I am where I need to be when I need to be there. To me, nothing says “Service Before Self” more than that.

One of the main reasons that I joined the Air Force was for the stability and consistent paycheck. Before the military, I was an Air Conditioning Technician. The money was fantastic, especially for being as young as I was. After a few years of crawling through attics on my stomach, dealing with the fiberglass insulation rashes, and the extreme temperatures in the summer I set out to find something new for my life. This resulted in me entering the military in March of 2015.

I believe that stability can sometimes drive people to become complacent with their jobs and lifestyles. It’s easy for people to forget that they are not just earning a paycheck, they are representing the military even when no one is looking. This is where “Integrity First” comes into play. This core value is to me a value that is learned and strengthened through trust and stability. The more you trust that the Air Force will take care of you the more you will embody all of the Air Force's core values but mostly “Integrity First”.

In conclusion, I believe that every individual person's personal values jive with the Air Force's core values in some way, shape, or form. For me, its humor, cleverness, adventure, punctuality, and stability coincide with the way I align the Air Force core values. So in the famous words of the United States Air Force, “Integrity First, Service before Self, and excellence in all we do”.
