Established in 1775, June 14, the army profession is recognized as the first military branch to protect the United States Constitution against foreign and domestic. The profession of the army is an important task; not everyone in the world can do. It represents being part of something bigger than themselves. The occupation of the army means changing the world by protecting the country. When soldiers wear that uniform, it represents pride, patriotism, and selfless service. This profession also represents anxiety to the families having military loved ones because of the sacrifices they face.

The Conduct and Character of a Soldier

A soldier’s conduct and character are essential because it symbolizes all military personal the United States. In this profession, soldiers are sworn in under oath, meaning they have given up their freedoms, subjected to military discipline, and have to follow strict regulations. That's the foundation of this profession. Soldiers must conduct themselves a certain way because the world looks up to them. Soldiers are the protectors of this nation. Being in the army profession means training hard. Major conflicts weren’t won without boots on the ground. It is important soldiers remain professional in this profession because they partner with other nations to accomplish the mission. This profession focuses on its vision. The army vision focuses on three roles prevent, shape, and win. It is a soldier character to prevent conflict, shape the environment by engaging with partners to contain enemies and win by accomplishing the mission the correct way.

In this profession, soldiers have a list of core values they abide by: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. Soldiers must abide by these values in this profession because it symbolizes strength as they grow. The army profession is built upon trust. Soldiers must have and show integrity so their leaders can trust them. Trust is the soul of becoming a productive soldier. The reliance on the character and ability measures trust.

This nation also puts their trust inside this profession by trusting the army will provide protection where-ever combatant commanders need it. It is impossible to accomplish a mission without it. In this profession, soldiers are professionals and experts. Educated soldiers are trained to perform their duties, just like other professions. The training soldiers do trains them to become leaders.

Military Justice and Discipline

The conduct of a soldier is essential. Performing their duties, exerting discipline through all hardships shows that soldiers are held at high standards. If soldiers fail to perform their duties, they will be subjected to the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The Uniform Code of Military Justice is an army regulation to applies to all personal in the United States military active duty or reserve. The regulation for this is AR 27-10. If a soldier fails to obey orders, not be professional in this profession, or not perform well, a military justice system will punish them. It is the criminal law for soldiers. When a soldier is punished, they can face the Article 15. There are three types of the Article 15: summarized, company grade and field grade. A soldier must stay professional so that they won't face those. If convicted, a soldier can face up to 14 days extra duty, restriction of pay, one grade reduction, or even worse military separation. A soldier can also face jail time.

Starting as a lower enlisted, you will be trained to become a leader in the army. A leader in the United States army job is to teach and lead soldiers to and from war. An army leader provides purpose, direction, and motivation. An example of an army leader would be First Sergeant Romar. First Sergeant Romar is a good leader because he leads by example. He makes sure things are being done correctly, and every soldier is good. He also teaches his soldiers to train as they fight.

This profession requires every person to be tested for their abilities. This profession shapes soldiers through training to become experts. This profession makes it essential for soldiers to use problem-solving skills because the mission depends on it. The responsibility of a soldier is vital because it is standing between a pass or a failed mission. Under pressure, a good leader must respond efficiently.

ADP 6-22 is an Army Doctrine Publication that talks about leadership and army leadership qualities. Each soldier must abide by this publication because they will understand what a leader is and how a leader supposed to lead. Its different types of leadership. You have attributes and competencies. Under attributes of leadership consists of character, presence, and intellect. The character of a leader is essential in this attribute because it consists of following the army values, having empathy to solve issues with soldiers, and having the discipline to lead by example. A leader must always display a professional appearance because being physically fit inside the army uniform shows your discipline enough to be physically fit. A leader must remain resilient enough to bounce back from tough situations. Confidence is vital under the attribute category because a soldier must understand and knows what he's talking about to be able to lead efficiently. A soldier must always maintain the correct military bearing also. Military bearing means handling any situation with ethical conduct. The last definition under attributes would be intellect. When a soldier has intellect, he's able to have the mental agility to solve problems effectively. He's also able to listen to directions to explain them more quickly so others can understand. When a leader master the attributes, they'll be able to receive results through the competencies. The soldier would be able to lead, build trust, to lead by example to develop leaders. A leader also creates a positive environment for soldiers to work and accomplish the mission. A leader's influence can motivate soldiers by making them feel comfortable and confident.

Profession conduct and character are essential because, in this organization, a soldier serves the American people. A soldier must protect and defend the constitution. It is a leader's job to enforce that. Becoming a leader is a process. It is the process of influence. A leader must first be a follower. A leader cannot know how to lead if they did not follow first. When a leader gets results, they develop the organization. A soldier needs to build trust with his group or team because it builds cohesion. A leader must also care for their members. Followers respond to the guidance given by the leader. A follower must be subordinate also. Followers must show respect and support to their superiors and learn from them because one day, the follower would be in their position. Receiving great results is a common goal every leader should have. Army leadership is the key to this Profession. Without direction, soldiers will not be trained the way they are, and rules wouldn't be enforced. Soldiers would not have the correct guidance to complete missions effectively and safely. Soldiers need to understand the concept of being a leader. In this profession, soldiers must understand how to communicate and show their team how important it is to use the chain of command.

Leadership and Development in the Army

Command is the authority in the military service someone has over subordinates. Using the chain of command is important because some issues can get fixed at the lowest level. The chain of command consists of privet, privet two, privet first class, specialist, sergeant staff sergeant, sergeant first class first sergeant than sergeant major. If soldiers have an issue that affects morale, discipline, or mission effectiveness, soldiers can use the commander's open-door policy. A commander is a commissioned or warrant officer who exercises command authority over the military organization.

Professional conduct is important because every soldier will receive a performance counseling. Counseling is a process a subordinate soldier uses to monitor a soldier's performance. Another purpose of counseling is to make sure a soldier is capable of performing out their duties. Soldiers must have self-discipline. If soldiers do not have good self-discipline, it can result in receiving a negative counseling. When a soldier receives a negative counseling, it is handled by a corrective action. Failure to complete the corrective action can result in the Article 15 Uniform Code of Military Justice action. The commanders and other leadership will enforce discipline, the regulations, and the policies of the United States Army. The soldiers must follow orders.

At all times, soldiers must show respect to seniors. As an army leader, you must recognize your soldier's needs and care for their well-being to establish a pleasant working climate. If soldiers have a great working environment, they will perform better. Soldiers are soldiers on and off duty and will conduct themselves as such. It is important soldiers do not violate good conduct be the military police will be informed if they do so. Before exercising nonjudicial punishment, they must use an administrative action first. An administrative action will be on the spot correction or extra training. Counseling is there to improve a soldier. An improper relationship means junior enlisted as in privet to specialist cannot have an improper relationship with noncommissioned officers as in corporal to sergeant major. Certain personal relationships between junior enlisted and non-commissioned are prohibited. Officers and enlisted personnel cannot have inappropriate relationships, either. Anything involving repeat visits to nightclubs, bars, restaurants, and house visits are not permitted if they compromise their integrity.

When your chain of command has evidence of fraternization soldiers will get in trouble. It is ok if two junior enlisted soldiers have an ongoing personal relationship. However, if one of those junior enlisted soldiers becomes a non-commissioned officer, they have one year to get married. An example of trainee and soldier would be trainers in Tradoc such as the instructors in advanced individual training. They will initiate punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice if this happens. Soldiers must be knowledgeable about what is allowed and what's not under Army Regulation 600-20 Army Command Policy. Perception is everything in the United States Army, and soldiers who violate these policies will get caught.

Equal Opportunity and Sexual Harassment Policies

Soldiers need to treat others fairly. Regardless of religion, skin color, or ethnic group, everyone must be treated equally. The Army's Equal Opportunity program applies to soldiers and soldier's families. The Army EO program applies to soldiers on and off post, also during duty and non-duty hours. The commanders are responsible for establishing a positive equal opportunity environment inside their unit. Each company and battalion are assigned an equal opportunity representative. Each equal opportunity representative will hold the rank of sergeant promotable or above. The commander is responsible for implementing equal opportunity training. It is important to implement equal opportunity training to bring awareness to situations such as racism, gender, and national origin.

The Equal Opportunity program can also prevent sexual harassment. It is the commander's responsibility to prevent sexual harassment. Soldiers must keep it professional at all times. There are different forms of sexual harassment. The various forms of sexual harassment will be verbal or nonverbal. Non-verbal examples will be someone looking hard in a suggestive manner, winking, or blowing kisses. Verbal sexual harassment will be sexual jokes, explicit profanity, whistling, and many more. If a soldier is sexually harassed, they must file a report to your chain of command or the equal opportunity representative. Its five different types of approach soldiers can use to handle sexual harassment. Soldiers can use the direct approach, indirect approach, third party, chain of command, or filing a formal complaint. The direct approach is when a soldier confronts the harasser upfront telling them their behavior is not appreciated. The indirect approach method is when you send a letter to the harasser about the unpleasant action. With a third party and indirect approach are hand to hand. The only difference is the third-party approach is when the soldier has someone else confront the harasser about the victim notifying them about the unpleasant behavior. Soldiers can also seek assistance from their chain of command or file a formal complaint.

The training that soldiers do to prevent equal opportunity is beneficial. The army also has a program to stop sexual assault. The program the army use to stop sexual assault will be the sexual assault prevention and response program. The purpose of this program is to bring awareness to sexual assault to prevent it and bring a safer working climate to all military personal. It is also there to train soldiers to handle this situation and be aware.

The Army also has a victim advocacy program. The commander must ensure victims have twenty-four-hour access seven days a week. That applies to soldiers in Garrison or soldiers deployed. The use of this program is optional. Understand that sexual assault is a crime. Sexual assault in the United States Military is not allowed. It is two ways to report sexual assaults. You can make a restricted report and an unrestricted report. A restricted report is a report the victim of sexual assault makes that is completely confidential. Soldiers will receive medical attention and counseling without triggering an investigation under restricted reporting. Unrestricted reporting is the same but with slight differences. With unrestricted reporting, the victim will have medical treatment and counseling, but an investigation will also be implemented.
