As a musician, I have traveled a couple of times, yet I had never lived such an embarrassing but rewarding experience as the one I am going to tell. Despite the unexpected events, traveling to different parts of the world represents a new unforgettable adventure, mostly when it is for artistic purposes. Indeed, my first experience abroad was also my first experience in the musical world. I had never had the chance to show what my guitar and I had to offer until an unexpected opportunity arose. I was invited to perform at a charity concert in the country of Tikal, not as the starring musician of course, but it was the chance of my life. There was only one problem: I had never been to this country or performed in front of thousands of people. I will never forget the unfortunate events I went through during my first musical performance in Guatemala.

It all started with the uncomfortable waiting for the bus and the maddening bus trip. As an amateur traveler, I did not book my ticket, and though I was at the station at 5:00 a.m., the tickets were run out. Consequently, I waited for the next bus by the side of people who did their best to bother me. Apparently, the lady sitting next to me, her child and I were trying to kill time in different ways. I was reading, the kid was hitting my luggage and screaming at me, and his mom was checking her phone. Afterward, the bus arrived, and I rapidly got on it. I thought everything would be better from there on, but my bladder had other plans. An hour had passed by when I realized I forgot to go to the bathroom before boarding. Time seemed endless for me. Even the beauty of the skies, landscapes, trees, and roads was not enough to distract me from my wild necessity. After the longest three hours of my life, I finally got off and realized there had always been a restroom on board. Unfortunately, after I reached Guatemala City, things did not get any better.

My appointment with the concert organizer did not go as I would have desired. Once I had gone to the bathroom, I took a taxi and headed to Paul’s restaurant, a little but cozy typical food eatery. There, Mary and I had lunch and discussed details about the concert. Among other matters, she apologized for having invited me at the last minute and explained to me that other musicians would join me, but I could not focus on her words. I was lost in her green eyes and beautiful long blonde hair. I would have given her my life if she had asked for it at that moment. However, her beauty obscured my mind so much that I felt nervous and stupidly moved my elbow towards my glass, spilling my beverage on Mary’s white dress. Though she was sort of empathic and said it did not matter, I was just so embarrassed. Soon, the waiter gave Mary a towel. Then, after I apologized a thousand times, Mary and I went to Doroteo Stadium, the concert place.

My performance started awfully but ended beautifully. I felt how the low temperature of the country had tensed my fingers, which preoccupied me so much that I started shaking. The eyes of thousands of people on me made playing even more challenging. I had a headache, dizziness, sweating, trouble breathing, and excessive fear, but undoubtedly I was already too far as to give up, so I told myself: “This is my chance to either start a successful musical career or ruin it all. I have to make a choice now; there is no time to think, just to act”. Therefore, I took my instrument and started playing it. It was like my hands themselves knew the songs. The notes ran smoothly through the air, and as the other musicians joined me, I could sense the spectators’ feelings of joy and excitement. The audience was motivated by me, but it was motivating me as well. It was the perfect interaction that words could not reach. Unfortunately, it ended too soon. While I was stepping down, I heard the crowd cheerfully clapping, whistling, and crying my name. Even Mary congratulated me and asked me to visit her, not as a musician, but as her guest. In the end, I made it after all and showed I was worth listening to.

The awful and uncomfortable journey, the incident with Mary, and my breathtaking moment at the stadium did pay off at all. Those scenarios led me to comprehend that traveling is not always comfortable, meeting people is unpredictable, and playing my guitar is not always easy. Besides, I understood that if I am confident enough, music can speak through my guitar chords and say what I cannot transmit by the wording. It has come to be the most rewarding and significant purpose of my life. In a nutshell, all the incidents I faced and the lessons I learned during this adventure will stay forever in my mind.
