I woke up exhausted from the roaring engines. My legs felt as if they were an old rusted metal that hasn’t been used in ages. I could hear the ice cubes strike the glass. As the soda started fizzing out of the can, it made the ice cube dance, giving off a satisfying clink, it was time for lunch. The flight attendant passed the two aisles with what looked like a store in the form of a cart. Each person asked the same question, “Would you like something to drink?”. We were given the choice of a chicken or turkey sandwich. I chose the chicken, hoping I made a good choice. I ripped open the package as the steam burned my finger. The chicken was coated with a savory sauce, and on the side was white rice. I remember devouring the last bit as if I haven't eaten in days. I could hear the conversation of the people that sat behind us. A family who was as eager as I was to get off the plane. I sat in silence as I wondered what my family doing at that moment. I daydream over what my next week would be like, the type of things I’d see, hear, and taste. The plane was huge, it was the biggest plane I had ever been on. It had two aisles and three columns of seats. It was very spacious and each chair came with a TV where you could watch as many movies as you wanted to. I was going on my fifth movie, I couldn’t take it anymore, I wanted to land. Being on a plane for 10+ hours made me so anxious to have my feet back on the ground.
When I got on the plane, I remember being thrilled. I never knew I would regret it. That was the longest plane ride I have ever been on. In the summer of my 6th grade, me, my mom’s co-worker, her daughters, and our friends took a vacation trip to London. I was very close to them, I have known them my whole life. We would do lots of things together. We went just to be tourists and for the once-in-a-lifetime experience. I was very bummed that my mom couldn’t make the trip. Her job wasn’t letting her take any vacation days. I tried to not let that ruin the trip for me. We have been preparing for this trip for a while.

When I got up it felt as if I had forgotten how to walk. Stretching my legs out lightened up my mood, it was something I was waiting to do. The moment I stepped out of the plane, my excitement went through the roof. I knew the next week was going to be full of fun and adventure. The first thing I saw when I got off the plane was a huge United Kingdom flag. It was beautiful. The neverending plane ride wore me out so the first thing I did was go to sleep. As I was lying on the bed, it felt as if I were laying on clouds. I was so jetlagged that I didn't have time to admire the elegant hotel we stayed at.
The next morning was bright and sunny. That morning we went to Starbucks, I got my usual order, a grande caramel frappuccino with extra caramel. I was confused when I received my colorless frappuccino. I asked my mom’s coworker and I remember her saying that many of the ingredients that are used in the United States were illegal in the United Kingdom. The frappuccino was good, but it still felt like it was missing something. As we were making our way to the underground, we saw lots of bright red phone booths that filled each corner. The traffic was crazy, countless cars filled the streets as each person was trying to get across to go on about their day. It reminded me of home, how San Francisco is always so fast pace. When we finally arrived at Waterloo Station, we went to go see the London Eye and Big Ben. We got on the London Eye first. I was so excited because I loved riding Ferris wheels. We waited in line for about 30 minutes. Once it was our turn, we got on and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. We were in a little jelly bean-shaped room that was all clear except the floor. There was a long wooden bench inside. It was really cool, it felt and looked like we were in a floating bubble. You could see that the cityscape was full of both modern buildings and old antique buildings. It looked like it was taken from a movie scene, the way the water glistened in the sun. We all took lots of pictures for memories and sent them to our loved ones back home. The moment we got off, I remember seeing a bride and groom get on with a pastor. They were going to get married on the top of the London Eye. It looked like it was a small quick ceremony just for them. I thought it was such a cute, unique gesture. They both looked so happy as we all yelled “Congratulations!”. Our next stop was Big Ben. It was very close by, so we walked the whole way there. It was about a 20-minute walk. When we got there, there were a lot of old buildings. Big Ben was attached to a castle-like building with many windows. The closer I got, the more intricate details I could see. We took lots of pictures of ourselves and the building. There were lots of tourists there, it was a busy street full of cars and people. As the clock struck 1:00, we got to hear the bells ringing. We then went into the many souvenir shops that were around. There were so many things that I wanted to get. I decided to go with some refrigerator magnets. After we got off, we went to a nearby dog park just to enjoy the weather. There we played with dogs and talked to random strangers. They were all so nice and friendly to us. I loved listening to people talk because of their accents, it made conversations more interesting. We then went back to the hotel to go swimming because we couldn't take the blazing sun any longer.
We were all having fun and enjoying ourselves when I realized that I was truly lucky to be where I was. I knew that I wanted to come back to London in the future. I would always see London in pictures or movies, but never would I have imagined that I would have the chance to see it with my own two eyes. Ever since I was a little girl, I remember it being on my bucket list. At that moment I came to the conclusion that when I got older, I wanted to travel the world. I wanted to see every inch of the world and see all the different cultures and styles of living. I feel like this experience sparked many future trips I hoped to go on. Ever since then, the only place I visited was Mexico. It was nice visiting Mexico and knowing more about my roots, but I also want to see other people’s roots and lifestyles. It also made me want to study abroad in the future, maybe in my junior year. I have already started to go to meetings about studying abroad and asking questions about people’s experiences. After I went on this vacation trip, I found a more adventurous side of me, and made me thankful for the opportunity I got.
Once I got home, I was thrilled to let my family know all the different things I did over there. They asked me many questions and wanted to know everything I did over there, from when my day started to when my day ended. I was happy to be home because I honestly missed my bed and my family. Although I had a fun trip, I really wished my family went because I knew it would’ve been better. I waited till we all were done eating to give out the gifts. We all sat in the living room to watch TV. Handing everyone each their own, I saw a glow on faces and I knew they all liked their presents. As I was handing them out, I said with excitement that next time we will all be going to London together, and their ear-to-ear smiles filled the room.
