The story starts off in dystopian future America, called Panem led by President Snow. There was a war many years ago, which resulted in the country being divided into twelve poor districts and one rich totalitarian capital. The twelve districts all represent different characteristics and beliefs based off the resources they have. District twelve, known for mining coal, is where the story takes place and where the main characters Katniss and Peeta are from. In the history of Panem, many years ago the districts tried to rise up against the Capitol and failed. As punishment for the rebellion, the Capitol started The Hunger Games. Every year, each of the twelve districts has to randomly select a girl and a boy based on the ages of twelve to eighteen to compete in The Hunger Games, which is a nationally televised event. This is due to the capitol having power over all and forces for The Hunger Games to occur. This game has only one victor and the game only ends when everyone has been killed, but one person is still left standing. Katniss Everdeen, a sixteen year old girl, part of district twelve with her mother and younger sister Primrose. District twelve, was very poor and it was especially difficult for her after her father died in the coal mines. Katniss has to fend for herself and her family because her father died and her mother was consumed with grief. With a bow and arrow by her side, she perseveres. The day of the reaping arrives and Primrose Everdeen, who just turned of age ends up getting chosen first.
Primrose’s sister Katniss turns ballistic and declares that she will volunteer as tribute. The council allows this to happen for the first time believing that this will bring in a bigger audience. Peeta gets chosen next and this makes Katniss believe that who she will be working with doesn’t seem so bad. She recalls how he gave her a loaf of bread while she was searching for food in the garbage near his family’s bakery. Although, she does put her guard up everyday, knowing that Peeta is her partner in the games, lets her ease up a bit. They both say their goodbyes to their loved ones and set their mark. Peeta and Katniss arrive at the Capitol and meet the other tributes from the districts. There they are tested in their strength through training. Katniss is exceptional in shooting with a bow and arrow. She first learned this by her father and continued hunting after his death, with her friend and love interest, Gale. After being tested in training and scored, Peeta and Katniss are then being televised on a talk show. On the show Peeta says that he is in love with Katniss; however, right after the show Katniss is furious with Peeta for making up such an absurd lie. Peeta’s reasoning was to help her gain a bigger audience. In fact, Haymitch, their instructor and only winner of district twelve, admits allying with Peeta because this will help bring in sponsors for the game. Although, Katniss feels used she soon realizes that this will help her win the game.

The seventy-fourth Hunger Games begins and all contestants are put into the arena and they all wait for a countdown to go to the Cornucopia in the middle of them to grab supplies; however, Katniss decides to run based off what Haymitch has told her. She runs far as she can get from the Cornucopia and ends up scaling a tree and sleeping there for the night. However, she gets awoken by fireballs coming at her. Katniss gets injured, but this does not stop her from running. She ends up hiding in a tree once she believes she is far enough away. Katniss is resting on a tree when she sees Rue, a young tribute. Rue tells her about tracker jackers and how they are planted by the Capitol. She explains how they can kill and how there is a nest of them near them. Katniss decides to chop of the branch the contains the nest of tracker jackers and have it drop on the Career tributes from district two who are right below them. This causes chaos. Two of the Career tributes die and the rest run, however, Katniss ends up getting stung and instead of running away, she runs to retrieve the bow and arrow from a girl that had died from the tracker jackers that Katniss released. She remembers how her father taught her how to survive with a bow and arrow. Thus, she grabs it to help herself survive. However, while she is running to grab the bow and arrow, Peeta arrives to try to stop her by shouting for her to run because Cato, a strong man from district two, ends up coming to the scene. Peeta attacks Cato, while Katniss escapes; however, she doesn’t get too far because she loses her consciousness. Katniss slowly recovers and is back on the run. She ends up crossing paths with Rue and they soon work together.
They decide to destroy the Career’s necessities by Rue causing a distraction, while Katniss goes to bomb the supplies. However, when Katniss goes back to meet with Rue, she sees Rue being stabbed by a tribute. Katniss kills the tribute to revenge Rue and sings her a song as she takes her last few breaths. While the games continue, there is an announcement made that now two people are allowed from the same district to win the game. Katniss quickly goes to Peeta, but sees that he is camouflaged so no one can find him. After seeing the condition that he is in, Katniss ends up taking care of him in a nearby cave. After fighting with Peeta, Katniss leaves to go to the cornucopia to get Peeta some medicine for all his injuries. Once Katniss reaches the cornucopia, she tries to go as quickly and steadily as possible so no one sees or harms her. Sadly, things don't go her way and she ends up getting attacked by a tribute. However, Thresh, a district eleven member quickly comes to her rescue because of her friendship to Rue. She grabs the medicine and goes on her way to help Peeta to better health. Once Peeta is recovered, they both work together; Peeta grabs berries, while Katniss hunts. The berries that Peeta grabbed were poisonous and luckily Kantiss catches this before either of them ate any. Kantiss keeps the berries with her, after seeing someone die from eating them. She believes that this will be a good way to kill tributes easily by tricking them into eating the berries. The last ones standing are Katniss, Cato, and Peeta; the rest have died. Katniss and Peeta see Cato running towards them. They notice that the Capital wanted to play another game, that was sending creatures that look like the dead tributes to attack them.
They all go to top of the cornucopia to escape the creatures below them. Cato tries to attack Peeta, however, Katniss ends up pushing him down towards the malicious creatures. To make his death quick and painless she shoots him with a bow and arrow. Katniss and Peeta believe that they are now the last ones standing and have won the game. However, a change is made. The gamechangers decide to make things more interesting by taking the previous rule away. Now there can only be one victor. Peeta and Katniss are forced to compete; however, they both decide to eat the berries and die together as a way to oppose the Capital.
