Many people would say that their first musical concert was enlightenment and enjoyment to them. some may not say it was something they wouldn’t forget about. However, not how I felt about my first live musical performance. My experience was unforgettable, it was quite an enjoyable experience that I watched on the campus of Brooklyn College, which was on September 24, a day that wasn’t forgettable. I never listened to jazz music before, I was introduced to it that day. The performers were from different parts of the world, countries such as Brazil, Spain, the United States and Uzbekistan, which I found interesting, how different backgrounds coming together to perform a piece. The way they organized and performed together made it seem like they were practicing for months. However, it took them 3 weeks. Two of the performers were students that attended Brooklyn College.

The music played throughout the performance was seen to me as being very diverse. The instruments that were being played, such as the piano, trumpet, and guitar; the performers and conductor all stood out to be outstanding. I witnessed the concert being interesting, because of how small the setting was and how limited the performers were. All members of the performance showed how observant they were with the conductor. Which, in my opinion, is very important, because each member of the performance should stay alert to everything that’s going to happen next during each piece of the music. Hence, because it contained various instruments that contributed to the whole piece of the musical show. Instruments such as the piano, brass and the strings played a significant part during the pieces of music. The pieces had many different tones within the harmonies because each piece that was being introduced started with the piano and trumpet. The songs changed when it came to the texture and the harmony in the songs as well. Many songs that were being performed were portrayed as being bright and cheerful in some parts of the songs. Other parts of the song were quite relaxing and calming, because of the changed in the tempo and notes of the piano, trumpet, and guitar, etc. Also, the reputation of songs is enjoyable to my ears, listening to the changes being made is also pleasing to me.

However, I was expecting some songs to be a little upbeat, sounds that will cheer me up and uplift my mood. I expected to see more people there witness the performance as well, the more people the better. It wasn’t how I expected it to be the beat was very pleasant to hear but didn’t grab my attention for so long. After a while I felt it go down, it was very relaxing causing people to lay down and close their eyes. Some songs were just off to me, they were very dull even though the song was about love. The songs were very enjoyable, but it's because of the different genre that was sung. The songs were very hard for me to even introduce it to anyone because to me it lacked the sense of beat and just didn’t show that the performers practiced enough. They didn’t show that they were involved and passionate about one or more songs. That’s why watching a live performance is different than just a recording, because it should connect to the people. Which did to me in parts of the concert, the beat of the music that I fed on and I enjoyed the view of Lily Pond at Brooklyn College.

With all the positive and negative the jazz performance was an enjoyable experience, as stated I never heard or the type that listens to jazz music. I wouldn’t even have been introduced to it if it wasn’t for this assignment. This concert made me more aware of the diversity in the music not just because of the different genres but also because of the performers. It just made me realize how important diversity is when it comes to music. The different tones and harmony etc. make you more open about listening and introducing yourself to different kinds of genres in music. Jazz music made me want to learn more and not be too picky about diverse songs.
