‘Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue’ a lunch-time concert by Quintet of the Americas was the music concert that I attended at York college on April 2nd, 2019 in the academic core building. I attended the event with a few of my fellow classmates. This concert was not the first concert that I ever attended. I attended a few concerts before as well. The concert last for about two hours. It was impressive to hear pieces composed by such talented people.
I was happy about going to the concert because I was able to compare it with the ones that I have attended before. The difference I noticed between the two is the audience. The audience is usually standing but here they all were seated. Also, in other concerts, It’s a lot more crowded. I think the crowd plays a huge role in the environment. I was actually expecting a lot more crowd and a lot more performances. I was expecting a small interval as well but there wasn’t any. The concert was decent and nice.

The songs that were sung were nice and catchy. The concert was composed of pieces that shine different lights on the various periods of the history of music. The first piece of music that was played was ‘El Picaflor’ (The Hummingbird) by Jose Barros, this song used flute with a sweet melody. The second song performed was ‘Ventos’ by Ricardo Romaneiro and some of the other pieces that were played were ‘Fireflies’ by Adam R. Young, ‘Tzigane’ by Valerie Coleman and ‘Wow’ by Renee Manning. Some of the songs were happy and thrilled with high pitch and dynamics while others sounded really sad with low dynamics and sad background music.
One of the lady performers sang a song called ‘Don’t Talk to Me When I Am Gone’. Which was one of my favorites out of all. I think the lady sang brilliantly, I really enjoyed this song because the lyrics were beautifully written and it was a straight forward musical piece. The dynamics started off low and went higher and higher. The balance between the orchestra and soloist was just perfect.
Some of the instruments that were used to enhance the beauty of the songs were the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and tuba. A free program booklet was given at the end of the show which gave a little overview of the concert. The booklet contained a variety of helpful and interesting information. It had a list of instruments that were played in the background. Also included the list of the performers and works to be heard, with program notes describing the compositions.
In general, the concert was very touching. A combination of romantic and classical styles kept the audience in suspense. I am sure the audience enjoyed the show a lot. The best part about the concert was that there were different styles and genres of music. Both modern and classical music was played which I really appreciate. It was not very exciting or thrilling but still, I enjoyed it and wanted to know what the next piece of music will be. the concert I attended didn’t make me fall asleep or lose interest, instead, it kept me at the edge of my seat in the fascination of the amazing talent and brilliance of the composition and performance together.
