1.6 billion people are homeless in the world (“As Cities Grow, So Do the Numbers of Homeless.”). Something happened the other day that I can’t ever get out of my head. There was this guy that was probably in the war, he had one arm and one leg, he was a black man and he was very hungry. We were waiting on the sidewalk to catch the bus when this homeless guy who asked for money. I thought to myself, where did all the money go? Then it came to me, space. I think that we should spend no more money on space exploration.
The first reason is that I think that money on space exploration is very misspent. In January of 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia was launched for what would be its final journey into space. Columbia, the oldest space shuttle to go into space. This was her 28th mission when it got damaged right after launch. The damage was not noticed until she broke apart well trying to come back to earth prior to the landing on February 1, 2003. All people on the shuttle died in what was the worst space-related accident since the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded on take-off in 1986 (Joyce Dejoie). As you can see, yes it was a somewhat good space shuttle that has gone into space a bunch of times, but it also killed everyone on it and it was an example of misspent money because it was destroyed. This was a lot of money misspent and killed all the people and the shuttle. As Wallace Fowler said, “ NASA's 2015 budget is $17.5 billion”. It is estimated that the total economic benefit of each dollar spent on the space program has been between $8 and $10. (Wallace Fowler). The reason is that we spend too much money on space exploration which I think is true because as you can see we spend so much time and money on space when we could be spending it on poor hungry people.
Next, I think we are spending so much time and money on space when there are homeless people. We could take all the money misspent on space that we could spend on homeless people. People will say that if we can find another place to live we could take them up there, but they can’t afford to get up there. The needs of humanity should always come first. While there are people on Earth who need help, they should be helped, rather than seeing money spent on sending robots onto other planets (“Space Exploration Is a Waste of Money.”). This tells you that Hhumans should come first way before we even think about going to space. It also said that as there are millions around the world who are starving to death when people spend more and more money on space technology they should realize they are the killers (“Space Exploration Is a Waste of Money.”). This shows you that people that are spending money on space are real killers because they are spending so much money on space that we don’t have enough money to even make the earth a happy rich planet.
We should not spend valuable resources on space exploration because there are homeless people that are starving on the street, and the money that we use for space is misspent. Therefore, we should not donate any of our time or money to space programs.
