Being the oldest of three has been one of the toughest obstacles that I have gone through due to all the responsibilities: taking care of my sisters; earning good grades so they can view me as a role model; being the first one to speak English in my family and having to translate for my mom.

“ There’s agua in la casa mommy!!” The night was pitch black and the water was up to my knees the rain outside was persistent, just when we thought it stopped raining, it started back again. I had never experienced this, so I did not know what to expect. There was a river on my front lawn and I could see people on top of their houses. “ Mom… there is water coming into my room…” There were so many things to do but there was nothing that I could think of doing right away. I stood in the doorway of my room for five minutes. “Ale, do something, get your sisters to your room on top of your bed. Calm them down.” Right there and then something in my head clicked, I had to be the strong and responsible girl my parents have taught me all these years to be. I needed to be that person at that time more than at any other time in my life.

I was trying to be strong not only for my sisters but for my parents, there was a part inside me that wanted to crumble up in a little ball and sob uncontrollably. That was the first thing I wanted to do but it was the last thing I could do. Being the rock for my family, as my mom describes me, has a lot of responsibility but it’s something that I have grown into and have always done. The responsibility and hardworking characteristics that both of my parents have rubbed off on me which is something that I appreciate because those characteristics have made me the person

The responsibility and hardworking characteristics that both of my parents have rubbed off on me which is something that I appreciate because those characteristics have made me the person that I am. My parents always put us, their daughters, first and I have seen that as an example for me to follow. They taught me to always be there for the people I love no matter the situation. Being the rock of my family means being the strong one in difficult times and acting as a leader when people need it. This experience made me realize that I was sort of the backbone of the family and that I need to be there for my family by any means necessary.

My responsibility has been so big since I have helped my mom with everything since the beginning when I was a toddler. It all began at the age of four when I helped my mom with my middle sister by changing her diaper and feeding her. I also called 911 when my little sister was sick and couldn’t breathe when I was 8. As I kept growing up my responsibility grew and my parents trusted me with different tasks like taking my sisters to school and helping them with homework. The good thing about the responsibility that I have obtained over the years is that my parents have a lot of trust in me and know I wouldn’t do anything bad, but all positives come with negatives. For example, if I were to do something that is not responsible, my parents would have a hard time trusting me because they gave me so much trust and responsibility. My relationship with my parents, especially my mom, has grown immensely because they have taught me all the values that I have like being responsible and always being prepared to be the mature one and take charge in situations that required a lot of responsibility, regardless of my age. I have taken a lot of responsibility into my hands just because I want to help and I don’t want to see the people I love struggling; up to the point of helping my grandma, who also got flooded, with her insurance information and said she needed to get and also helping my neighbors, who are like family to me. All my family looks up to me and comes to me when they need some sort of help or need anything at all and I am really proud that they look up to me, especially my sisters and my little cousins.

Academically, this has helped me a lot because it has helped me be responsible for my classes and set my priorities straight. I have learned to do things maturely and without the help of adults and make mature decisions when the time comes. This has also led to me being independent and organized in everything I do. All the responsibility that I’ve taken over the years has made me mature earlier than most kids my age. It has also made me more aware of the struggles of an adult and all the responsibilities that an adult has to take. Leaving for college will not only be hard for my sisters but for my parents as well. I believe the responsibility will still be there no matter what and they will always go to me when they need something because they know I will still be there no matter what
