Having the passion to go outside and volunteer really helps build character and value, and for this nutrition service work assignment, I decided to go to the Houston Food Bank. There, I really noticed how lots of people come together almost every day to help the community and its people in many ways whether that’s through the means of offering and donating their clothes, and books, assisting with hot meal prep, or even collecting and distributing food/supplies at local neighborhoods. I really chose this activity because it really inspires me to see people coming together for the sole purpose of helping one another and supporting each other in times of need. Many of these people come in pairs or even by themselves and have no idea who they are working with. Even then, the people that come here treat each other with immense kindness and respect regardless of who it is. Seeing this type of unity brings me joy because it means that people care for each other and like to help one another whether it is in times of despair or in times of joy.
Another reason why I thought that the Houston Food Bank would be an amazing place to volunteer is that having the ability to visualize the contribution that you are making really allows you to understand the life’s that you are affecting and also making an impact on. Something really cool that I got to see was the machines that they use to store and pack the goods for other people and how they did it. Along with that experience, at the Portwall location, I got the see and help pack vegetables in 5-pound bags to help feed those that really need this. We placed carrots, potatoes, onions, etc into a medium-sized bag and then had to weigh it to make sure that each and every bag contained at least 5 pounds. Once that was done, we zip-tied the bags and plastic-wrapped a whole palate of these small bags into larger bags to send for distribution to people. Also, having a friend come along and volunteer made it easier and more fun because these types of volunteering experiences help build one’s speaking ability and skills and allow more flexibility to work with others. In a way, volunteering provides you with more exposure and interaction with others allowing you to open up with others and get to know more people broadening your horizons with society as a whole. This is applicable to my friends, family, and community because it really helps bring out the qualities of community and service and in return are helping the people that you deeply care for and/or are affectionate towards. I think that this assignment was really amazing and that I really learned a lot over this winter break from this nutrition class and how it changes my perspective on nutrition as a whole.
