As history progress, many accounts of literature are likely to be encountered by authors and directors who attempt to inform and invite us to live inside the world of slavery. Living inside the fiction we learn to discern truth from falsehood, good from evil, and learn to find who we are, where we are, and where we are going. The plethora of literature produced regarding the issue of slavery doesn’t do the work of discernment for us, but by inviting us to live inside another world, for a moment audience members are faced with seeing themselves and their world from another vantage point and result we are either consoled or transformed, even if for a few hours. It is evident throughout history and drawing on the novels Kindred, Black Thunder, and the film Django Unchained concisely together they show the power of women and go further to signal strength towards women during the times of bondage.
In the horrid and disgraceful time period of slavery, slaves who were deemed property were met with many arduous challenges where most of them were able to encounter serious beatings, and at the same time, they were also raped, all these actions were totally inhumane. In the beginning, were early settlers required cheap labor for their massive amounts of freshly acquired land black and whites lived together as indentured servants, with the development of this system of indentured servitude servants would be supplied room and board while working in the master's fields and would customarily be worked for about four to seven years in substitution for land, money, weaponry, clothes or food. While the entire focus is still concentered on various black protagonists, Bontemps adequately includes different forms of sympathetic white characters.
